FutureYou Super Vitamin D with K2+

RRP: £19 for a 28-day supply

--What does the promo say?--

"Super Vitamin D with K2+ combines 25µg (micrograms) of vitamin D with 180 µg of vitamin K2 in the form of menaquinone-7 (MK-7).
The body produces vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, hence why it is regularly referred to as the sunshine vitamin.
Vitamin D contributes to musculoskeletal health. It allows calcium and phosphorus to be absorbed normally, contributes to the maintenance of normal bones, and plays a role in the maintenance of normal teeth. It also contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system, maintenance of normal muscle function and contributes to normal blood calcium levels.
Vitamin K2 works together with vitamin D3 to mobilise calcium from the blood vessels into the bones, maintaining bone health. Vitamin K2 is found in particularly high concentrations in fermented foods. These include sauerkraut, hard cheese and natto, a traditional Japanese dish made with fermented soybeans.
The vitamin K2 included in Super Vitamin D with K2+ has been the subject of 19 research studies, highlighting the importance of vitamin K2 in bone and cardiovascular health."

--Packaging--
The yoga pose on the outer cardboard box evokes both relaxation and strength, and as such, good health.
The capsules come in traditional plastic and foil blister packaging, and the foil is clearly labelled with days of the week to help you remember to take the capsules regularly.

--Usage--
Take one capsule per day, swallowing it whole with liquid. I usually take mine at the start of the day with breakfast.

--Appearance--
The capsules are an off-white colour, leaving no visible residue in the mouth.

--Scent--
Nothing discernible.

--Texture and consistency--
The capsule coating is thin and smooth enough so as to not be difficult to swallow, while not melting too quickly in the mouth.

--Effects--
While most of the benefits of vitamin K2 are not immediately visible (such as its positive impact on heart health and bone density), it's also starting to be hailed as a beauty supplement due to its healing properties. As a result, my habitually acneic skin definitely seemed clearer while I took this supplement, with the vitamin healing existing spots more quickly and preventing new ones from appearing. Skin also seemed less red and more 'glowing' - so I was definitely impressed by my 28-day supply (sent to me by FutureYou - thank you!).
It's also posited that K2 has anti-ageing properties, although of course the irony is that if this is working in this way, then nothing will happen - so in the short term, I won't be able to tell if it's really doing this.

--Value for money--
At 67p a day, it's up to you if you think this is worth it. For me, it is. The cost also goes down when you subscribe and save (£15 a month, or 53p a day) - arguably a small price to pay for both the internal and external benefits of vitamin K2.

FutureYou Vitamin Supplements

Products tested: Co-Enzyme Q10+; Vitamin B Complex+; Vitamin D+; Vitamin K2+; Cranberry+
RRP: from £9 for 28 tablets (1 month's supply)

--What does the promo say?--
"Our range of natural health supplements are scientifically proven to deliver more of what your body needs.  We carry out research to create the highest quality supplements with proven absorption and clinical benefit.
The Company has close ties with Cambridge University and Addenbrooke's Hospital (Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust).

FutureYou's product development is supported by a high-profile medical board including, among others, Professor Alf Lindberg, former head of R&D at Wyeth and Aventis and former member of the Nobel Committee and Secretary of the Medical Prize; Dr Nicholas Shenker, a consultant rheumatologist and expert in chronic pain syndromes at Addenbrooke's Hospital; Mr Peter Kirkpatrick BSc MBCHB MSc FRCS, a leading Cambridge University vascular neurosurgeon and Michael Heinrich, Head of University College London's centre for Pharmacognosy and Phytotherapy."

Individual product descriptions can be read at www.futureyouhealth.com .

--Packaging--
All of the vitamins come in compact boxes containing 28 tablets each, in standard foil and plastic casings, making them practical for travel. The tablets are each individually labelled with days of the week on the foil that houses them, making you more likely to remember to take them each day. The images on the boxes clearly illustrate the capsules' content and/or their benefits, using relaxing ideas that evoke both relaxation and good health.

--Usage instructions--
Take one pill per day in all cases.

--Appearance--
The fact of the pills coming in different colours is something that can be useful if you are taking more than one type (as you can see from the above, I was taking 5 during my one-month trial, thanks to the kindness of FutureYou's PR department). However, some might find the Day-Glo colours a bit disturbing in some cases: the Vitamin B Complex+, for example, is bright blue. However, they leave no visible residue in the mouth.

--Scent and taste--
None detectable.

--Texture and consistency--
Only mildly plasticky on the tongue - but as you swallow them whole with water, this metric is less relevant.

--Effects--
Addressing each of the supplements in turn:
  • The Co-Enzyme Q10+ has anti-ageing benefits, acting as a strong antioxidant. Your ability to produce this enzyme decreases with age - so to fight the free radicals that cause visible signs of ageing, this is a pretty good one to be putting into your body. Long-term, Q10 (also known as ubiquinone) has also been proved to combat Parkinson's disease, certain forms of cancer, heart disease and high blood pressure, leading to health as well as beauty benefits. The paradox of anti-ageing products is that if they're working, then nothing should happen. However, I did receive one compliment on my skin while using this product, which is encouraging. The Vitamin K2+ is also important for anti-ageing.

  • As well as the anti-ageing benefits outlined above, the Cranberry+ capsules have naturally moisturising qualities (by boosting collagen production thanks to a perfect balance of fatty acids: omega 3, 6 and 9), as well as containing enzymes that control excess sebum production. The high levels of vitamins A and C can promote healthy hair, increasing lustrousness and growth. All this could explain why I also received a compliment on my hair during this trial, as well as noticing a visible clearing of my acne.
  • The Vitamin B Complex+ contains a range of B vitamins which bring a whole host of benefits, including those mentioned above. Vitamin B7, biotin, also strengthens hair and nails. I mainly noticed a strenghthening of the nails during the trial period, with them growing more quickly than usual and seeming less weak overall. B12 also helps with this. In addition, B-vitamins reduce skin redness, which is something that I noticed occurring during the trial.
  • Finally, while I was testing the capsules, I got about my third cold in 6 weeks. This I attribute to a perfect storm of going from being at home with my baby for 6 months to returning to work in a school environment (where approximately 1 million children have touched *everything* before you), undertaking a course of sleep restriction therapy, going on a calorie-restricted diet, and my little boy bringing home all kinds of awful from the crèche. So what impressed me was that I got over this third cold MUCH more quickly than the previous two. While this could be down to a number of factors, I also can't ignore that I was taking the Vitamin D+; vitamin D is well-known to help fight disease. It also repairs skin damage faster, and as I'm a person who bruises easily, and whose bruises usually take a long time to fade, I noticed, too, that one recent one cleared up much more quickly than usual.
--Value for money--
The one-time purchase prices are as follows:
Co-Enzyme Q10+, £12 (28 days' supply; 42p per day)
Cranberry+, £14 (56 days' supply; 25p per day)
Vitamin B Complex+, £9 (84 days' supply; 10p per day)
Vitamin D+, £12.50 (84 days' supply; 14p per day)
Vitamin K2+, £19 (28 days' supply; 67p per day)

As you can see, prices vary wildly. Value-wise, I'd be inclined to go for the K2+ myself if purchasing these again with my own money, as it covers many of the same benefits as the Co-Enzyme Q10+ and the Cranberry+ , as well as providing a host of health advantages, for less money overall. I would also consider the B and D packages at times where I noticed weakness that I needed to repair quickly, or times where I thought I might be more vulnerable (such as going into winter).
However, there are ways to save on whichever FutureYou vitamins interest you, either via their Subscribe & Save method, which gives you a discount for signing up for regular deliveries long-term, or by buying one of their bundles. (The Women's Health bundle, for example, costs £44 on a one-time basis and £35 on the subscribe & save package, whereas buying all of the supplements it contains individually would cost you a total of £62.50.) What I would really love to see is a beauty or anti-ageing bundle that would include maximum value for all the vitamins I trialled. FutureYou are doing great work producing high-quality supplements that I would definitely recommend.

Vega Everyday-D: 400IU Vitamin D3 Chewable Tablets

RRP: from £5.95 for 100

--What does the promo say?--
"Suitable for the whole family, Vega EveryDay-D 400IU vitamin D3 chewable tablets have been designed for use by both adults and children from age 4 onwards. They are small, delicious blackcurrant-flavoured chewable tablets, designed to provide 10μg of vitamin D per tablet, as recommended by the UK government.
The 500 tablet bottle will provide vitamin D for a family of four every day for more than three months - so you only need 2 bottles to supplement your whole family every day throughout the whole of autumn and winter.
*Scientific Advisory Council for Nutrition
** Public Health England
1 Vitamin D3 contributes to the normal function of the immune system
2 Vitamin D3 contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth
3 Vitamin D3 contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function"
--Packaging--
The dark brown glass bottle is brightened up by the white and yellow label, as well as the golden screw-top. This evokes a strong idea of sunshine, which is how most of us naturally get vitamin D - and which we don't get enough of in the UK during the winter months.(Vegans can also find it difficult to get enough vitamin D as its primary sources are fish and dairy products.) The lid closes securely, but opens easily when needed.
--Directions for use--
Adults, and children from the age of 4, should chew one tablet per day. An advantage for those who find it difficult to swallow pills.
--Appearance--
The tablets are indeed small (smaller than your little fingernail) and a slight off-purple colour (reflecting their blackcurrant flavour).
--Taste and scent--
The tablets taste and smell of blackcurrant and are not overly sweet.
--Texture and consistency--
The tablets are slightly crunchy, but you do not have to bite too hard to chew them and they dissolve quickly in the mouth.
--Effects--
Vitamin D is not only good for building up the immune system, but also carries a whole host of other beauty and wellbeing benefits that help us out at this cold time of year: it can help weight loss (perfect for helping with those New Year's Resolutions!) and even prevent depression. But the benefits aren't just specific to winter: vitamin D is vital for cell growth and repair, meaning it stimulates collagen to fight the ageing process of the skin. It can also improve acne and eczema and I have certainly noticed my normally acneic skin looking calmer of late.
--Value for money--
£5.95 for 100 tablets comes to under 6p per day. A bottle of 500 tablets (which I was sent for free by Vega's PR) costs £26.95, which equals just over 5p per day - so a small saving. This competes well with other market offerings and as it is so pleasant to take - and the health benefits so numerous - I would recommend.

Mary Kay Limited Edition Celebrate Nourishine Plus Lip Gloss

RRP: £10
Sold via www.marykay.co.uk until November 15th, 2013. £1 from each sale will be donated to charity.

--What does the promo say?--
"Celebrate is a shimmery peachy-pink shade created from the fun swirl of two Mary Kay® lip glosses: Cream & Sugar and Pink Parfait. This versatile colour looks great on any skin tone. From the moment you glide on the creamy, ultracomfortable formula, you get brilliant shine plus an instant boost of moisture that leaves lips feeling soft and supple. The nourishing, nonsticky formula contains antioxidant-rich vitamins and plant-derived minerals to smooth, protect and condition lips."

--Packaging--
The swirl of pink and gold glosses in the plastic tube is definitely new and different, but it's practical as well thanks to the standard lipgloss wand. The pale gold lid also matches the golden gloss nicely while giving a classy aspect to the product and contrasting the pink gloss.

--Application--
Apply on its own, or over lipstick for a multi-layered effect.

--Appearance--
I was initially worried that the pink aspect of the gloss would make the overall effect garish. However, I needn't have been concerned: the result was pale, pretty, and multi-dimensional. The pink and gold combine very naturally together to create an authentic effect that worked well with my skin tone.

--Texture and consistency--
Non-sticky as promised. I like that it contains vitamins and minerals, too (though SPF would be even better).

--Longevity--
Doesn't last a meal, but then again, what lipglosses do?

--Value for money--
The £10 price tag means that it costs the same as Philosophy and Jurlique, so given the quality of the ingredients and the brand's profile, this seems about right. This is a high-quality product that does what it promises, and at £9 for the individual Cream And Sugar gloss mentioned in the promotional material (curiously, Pink Parfait is apparently unavailable), it's easy enough to create the same sort of effect again even after this promotional anniversary period is over. With £1 going to charity too, it also has that feel-good factor. However, I'd say that what this complimentary (thanks, Mary Kay!) lipgloss has most done for me is to reconsider the brand. In all honesty, the only experience I'd ever had with it before was an overly made-up advisor coming to visit us at home in the late 1990s or early 2000s. However, looking at the website, they seem to rival Avon quite nicely in terms of the quality and range of their products, perhaps even going one better. Even though some of their website photography is terrible, they offer something for everyone, whether it's funky neons or anti-ageing skincare. This makes it a brand I would definitely consider more in future, as I can already see some products that appeal.

Onça Company Beauty and Energy Supplement

RRP: £156 for a 30 day supply (60 sachets)
purchase from https://www.oncacompany.com/en/onlineshop/onca-30-day-supply.html in Euros, US $, HK $, £ sterling, Swiss francs, or Japanese yen

--What does the promo say?--
"Onça is a natural supplement, a powder of superior quality designed for beauty, energy and anti-ageing. Its essence is to give a real sense of well being. It is a very exclusive product, but not simply for the sake of elitism. Due to the very limited availability of the fruits, combined with the unique production process necessary to retain the nutrients, output is on a very limited scale. We can produce sufficient amounts to supply 3,000 people worldwide. Onça provides a complete formula with tropical botanicals, lipids (omega), amino acids, hydrolyzed collagen, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, carotenoids and flavonoids as present in the fruits of the Amazon rainforest. The fruits are harvested deep in the Amazon, from the most fertile soil on Earth. None of Onça's ingredients are plantation fruits. As two drinks per day Onça gives your body what it needs. By day, it is energising, cleansing, detoxifying, creating harmony and a sense of well being. By night, Onça is supporting the bodies recovery, rebuilding health, beauty and body cells. One Onça box contains 30 activator sachets (10 grams)  to mix in your morning drink and 30 regenerator sachets (10 grams) to mix in your evening drink. For the Onça community, the feeling of well being is multi-dimensional. It is not solely about the huge benefits of Onça as a natural source of beauty and energy, it is also about a spiritual connection to the rainforest. The physical manifestation of this is our partnership with Atini, a non-profit organisation formed by Indian leaders to defend the rights of the indigenous children of the Amazon. Onça donates a percentage of all revenue to support their work and specific projects."

--Packaging--
Onça keeps things simple with white sachets, gold writing on the front (with emphasis on the brand name and on whether it's a morning or an evening sachet), and black writing on the back (only in Portuguese though!) outlining the ingredients. Brief, precise and classy-looking.

--Usage instructions--
Dissolve one sachet in the morning and one sachet in the evening into a drink of your choice (250ml liquid). Onça recommends a milk-based or soya based drink, but as I'm not a massive fan of milk, and it's hardly hot chocolate season (probably the only way you can actually get me to drink milk), this was out. You can dissolve it into *any* drink, though, so this doesn't matter (more on this subject later). I'd recommend putting in the powder first (not last) and stirring throughout the addition of the liquid, and also throughout consumption. Hot drinks in general are also better (again, more on this later).

--Appearance--
The morning supplement did not look good at all: it was the colour of chocolate, but lacked the thickness to really convince yourself it was actually hot chocolate. Plus, no matter how well I mixed it, or into what drink, there always seemed to be more lumps/sediment than in the evening. The evening drink looked more like tomato soup due to its deep orange-red colour and proved much easier to mix for some reason (thus resulting in fewer lumps). Some of the lumps are actually camu-camu fruit, which you can eat and which are delicious. To be fair to Onça, they do mention that you can prepare the drink in a liquidiser if you don't "do" lumps, but I didn't try this.

--Scent and taste--
The morning drink was like a poor man's version of a Terry's Chocolate Orange: there was a chocolatey flavour and scent, and an orangey flavour and scent, but for some reason the flavours didn't seem to blend well together. There was also a third, yeastier flavour which may account for some of the unpleasantness I felt when drinking it. Blended with water, it was not nice. I found I was best off blending it with fruit juice or a smoothie as this seemed to make the flavours work better together.
The evening drink proved a far pleasanter experience. The unusual fruit scents of mana cubio and passionfruit fused together for an intensely citrusy, but not sour hit, of flavour, and for some reason this drink had a creamier scent and taste too. Overall it was much nicer to drink, and again it can work well in fruit juice or smoothies, but this blend was much nicer just mixed with water too.

--Texture and consistency--
As mentioned, I found the morning drink unpleasant not only because of its weird taste but also because of its gritty texture: no matter what I did I just couldn't get the lumpiness to go away and there was always a layer of sediment left at the bottom of the cup that I had to force down. The evening drink went down much more easily, with there being far fewer lumps each time. To reduce lumps, I'd recommend adding the powder to the cup first, then the liquid; stirring constantly throughout the mixing and consumption of the drink; and making the drink with hot liquid (it's possible that the heat makes the powder dissolve better). You could also try Onça's recommendation of preparing the drink in a liquidiser.

--Effects on the skin--
One of the product's main advertised benefits is smoother, plumper skin due to the increased collagen provided by the product (it's hydrolysed and is the main ingredient in the evening supplement). Firstly, you are never going to see a difference in five days' supply alone (this is the amount sent to me by Onça's press team), so on that score I can't say whether it really works or not. Secondly, the fact of touting collagen as the principal benefit suggests to me that this product is not really aimed at people my age (26) - so even if I did see benefits they would possibly not be optimal or as visible as in someone older. Many of the ingredients in the supplement are packed with vitamins (including A and B) which are supposed to improve skin health and condition generally, but again, in five days I did not notice any change in my acne, even though Onça contains lycopene, zinc and selenium - all famous acne-busting ingredients. Another thing which suggests this may not be aimed at my age range is that hydration is cited as a major skin benefit from this product  - which I am not convinced is something my oily skin requires.

--Other effects--
From the morning drink, I was supposed to notice the following effects:
- an improvement in hearing and memory
- strengthened skin, hair, teeth and nails
- healthier and more youthful appearance
- the feeling of being happier and more relaxed
- the feeling of being energised
- ease in controlling weight
- greater hydration
- a boosted immune system

The only aspect of this that I can truly say I noticed was in terms of energy: although my medical-student sister believed this effect to be a mere placebo, I definitely felt more energised in the mornings and felt I had a greater spring in my step. The major fallout has to be in terms of the immune system part: this not only failed to prevent me from catching my sister's cold but also did not lessen its effects or duration. However, a lot of the effects listed above are also not really measurable, especially over only a 5-day course (when it is supposed to be taken for a minimum of 30 days).

The evening drink promised the following:
- strengthened skin, hair, teeth and nails
- healthier and more youthful appearance
- the feeling of being energised
- improved sleep
- the feeling of being happier and more relaxed
- healthier eyes
- improved digestion
- pain relief
- decreased bloating

Of these, I would say that I primarily experienced pain relief (of recurring toothache due to wisdom teeth coming in - but this could also have been due to the paracetamol I was taking for my cold), and the feeling of being happier, more energised, and more relaxed. To say you instantly feel more tranquil and instantly physically better after (and even during) consumption of the evening drink is no exaggeration - but it's a temporary high, on a par to the instant stress relief you feel when eating chocolate (although unlike eating chocolate, there's no deadly sugar crash with Onça's evening remedy). I noticed no difference to my sleep, skin, hair, teeth or nails and I don't suffer with bloating or digestive problems. Other benefits would take longer than 5 days to see.

--Value for money--
At £156 for a month's supply this definitely needs serious consideration for most of us. If it's that or the gym membership, I'd say you'd get more from the gym membership. However, when you break down the cost, it comes out at around £5 a day - which is probably what many people spend on unhealthy snacks and chain-store coffee a day, as well as possibly other habits like cigarette-smoking, magazines, or lottery tickets. In this case, I would choose the Onça as it will do far more for you than these other everyday 'luxuries'. In my ideal world, though, I'd like to see Onça offer an option where you could choose the morning OR the evening supplements (or both, of course!) as different people will react differently to each of the drinks, and while others may find they benefit hugely from both, I personally was happiest with just the evening drink: it instantly destresses and makes you feel physically better in yourself. If Onça were to offer the evening drink separately (say, at £75-£80 a month - which is what some people spend on their mobile phone bill each month), I would definitely take them up on it.

Scandalous Gorgeously Rich Moisturising Shampoo and Conditioner

RRP: £5.49 each, or 2 for £7 at Superdrug (correct as of January 4th 2011)

--What does the promo say?--
"This shampoo creates a more luxurious lather than regular shampoos and feels wonderfully soft in the hand. The fragrance fills the room instantly, creating a pampering spa experience. Conditioning Murumuru butter will leave your hair feeling fresh and revitalised....Murumuru butter and vitamins have been added to this conditioner to nourish the hair to a glossy shimmer. The fragrance of the conditioner creates an entrancing layering effect. The feminine scent is released with every turn of your head."

--Packaging--
The combination of black, pink and gold creates an instant effect of a girls' night out, and in terms of practicalities it's fairly effective too (though the conditioner is a little more controlled while the shampoo rushes out of the tube a bit enthusiastically). Attention-grabbing, young and funky.

--Application--
Proceed as usual - lather shampoo into wet hair, rinse out, and then massage conditioner through, leaving it for a few minutes before rinsing.

--Appearance--
A very ordinary off-white colour for both; perhaps would have been nice if it had been a pale pink to echo the pink of the bottle design (I think adding gold glitter would be a bit much though).

--Scent--
Now, I don't know what kind of women they asked when putting their promotional material together and doing their market research, but sorry, Scandalous - I don't think this scent is feminine at all. In fact, it's masculine enough to be off-putting - a very heavy scent which just smells like shaving cream and aftershave. This might just be permissible in a unisex product, but quite clearly the packaging would send red-blooded men running for the hills, and most women (funnily enough) don't want to smell as if they don't have any shampoo of their own and so have just nicked their bloke's. Or am I just the exception there?! I don't think the murumuru butter is to blame as other websites describe the stuff as having a "natural, earthy aroma" - irritatingly, though, any other fragrances are only classified on the bottle under the umbrella term 'Parfum', so are untrackable. Grrr.

--Texture and consistency--
Smooth and luxurious. No problems there - including with washing out.

--Effects on the hair--
Makes hair silkier and less flyaway, and even keeps my hair in good enough condition so that I don't have to wash it every day. Top.

--Value for money--
£5.49 a bottle seems quite expensive seeing as competitors in this price bracket for the same amount of product include John Frieda, Tigi and Lee Stafford. However, the 2 for £7 deal is considerably better, so I'd take advantage of that if I were you. Truthfully, though, the only thing really stopping me from purchasing this product regularly is that smell - to me it is really off-putting, and made me realise just how large a part scent plays in our choice of product. Go back to the drawing board on that, Scandalous, and then I'll get back to you.
