Clinique Age Defense BB Cream SPF 30

RRP: £25 for 40ml
# of shades available: 3 (with the third being an online exclusive)

--What does the promo say?--
"NEW Age Defense BB Cream SPF 30 is a medium to full coverage cream that reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, helps conceal imperfections and enhances skin's complexion. The formula calms skin and helps protect against UV and environmental damage while working to help balance the skin, and provides oil and shine control to extend the life of the foundation all day."

--Packaging--
The pale green and silver ensemble is so far, so Clinique. Nothing outstanding here. Metal lid feels luxurious yet secure. Squeezing out of product from bottle is very easy to control.

--Application--
The product insert gives a range of possible uses, so you need to apply it as you see fit. Either way, you start by applying it all over your face. This way it serves as a sunscreen (and therefore an anti-ageing product), concealer and moisturiser, which also claims to soothe, protect against environmental aggressors such as pollution, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and play the role of a foundation. So you can just stop there. OR, after you've applied it, you can use it as a primer - so you can continue applying the rest of your makeup as normal.

--Appearance--
I find that shade 01 matches my skin tone very well, although if I had one teeny tiny criticism it would be that there is a slight off-white effect, which comes from the sunscreen element. This can be remedied through the artful application of powder - I'm currently using Benefit Dandelion and Arbonne pressed powder. Skins that are even paler could potentially just leave it at that, though.

--Coverage--
Coverage is excellent. For me, the use of powder, while necessary to regulate the colour slightly, is not needed for extra coverage, while the use of concealer need only be minimal (and maybe even not needed at all on good days).

--Texture and consistency--
Is similar to a light foundation in its consistency; it's not creamy enough to match a tinted moisturiser, and yet doesn't feel at all sticky. I'm guessing the lack of total creaminess is due to the sun-protection properties.

--Scent--
Slightly chalky perhaps, but ultimately smells clean. Nothing from the ingredients list jumps out as being dominant.

--Effects on the skin--
Wow-factor effect comes mainly from the coverage provided as well as the longevity of the product (see below). Face feels moisturised and oiliness feels controlled, but no more than with the use of my regular ensemble of products. Skin is not irritated by the use of the product. Longer-term use and testing would be required to see if it really protected against environmental aggressors or provided an anti-ageing benefit. Sun protection is excellent.

--Longevity--
Once applied, this doesn't need to be touched up. For this reason, it works well as a concealer, primer, foundation and sunblock.

--Value for money--
While I was initially a little shocked at the price, this comes into the same price range as foundations by Stila and Dermalogica. For tinted moisturisers the brand comparison is even better, falling into the same bracket as tinted moisturisers by Laura Mercier and Yves Saint Laurent. The appeal also comes from the fact that this BB cream, unlike a lot of Western offerings, actually seems to be a real contender to the multi-function products found in Asia rather than just being a tinted moisturiser under a different name. To recap, the Clinique BB Cream offers 9 separate functions (1. Concealer; 2. Anti-ageing over the long term; 3. Reduce the appearance of lines in the short term; 4. Defends against environmental aggressors;  5. Soothes; 6. Moisturises; 7. Controls oil; 8. Foundation; 9. Makeup primer). On the downside, though, this is expensive for a BB cream and you do have the feeling that Clinique are capitalising on the brand's image just a tiny bit: the only BB creams falling into this price bracket are the most premium lines from genuine Asian brands Missha and Skin79 (their normal products cost less than this). However, I would probably still buy it with my own money (I was sent a PR sample this time) due to its fabulous coverage, good colour match, ability to stay on the skin without turning my face into an oil slick, the fact that a little goes a long way, and the idea that while it is in the same price bracket as the brands mentioned above, it does so much more.

Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturising Lip Colour Balm

RRP: £14/2g

--What does the promo say?--
"Super-nourishing balm is loaded with mango and shea butters. Just what dry, delicate lips need to feel comfortably soft and smooth. Eight mouth watering lip tints in all, each with a subtle sheen."

--Packaging--
Differentiated from other lipstick pencils on the market by the silvery lid and end (you twist the end to get more stick when required). At the same time, though, it fits in well with Clinique's overall image of being glamorous yet easy to use. The lid is also 100% secure, with it fitting well onto the end of the stick and not falling off in your makeup bag or handbag (meaning no ruined lipstick, and no ruined bag. TOP.).

--Application--
Just slick it on as with a normal lipstick, twisting the end for more stick if needed. The pointed 'pencil' of the stick also means you can apply the stuff with total precision. No mess, no fuss.

--Appearance--
The colour I was sent (Graped Up) is not as brown as it looks on Clinique's website; in fact, it has an incredibly natural and classic feel to it, blending brilliantly with my English-rose complexion and matching the natural colour of my lips while still making me look like I've made an effort. The stick colour itself also looks natural with a slight shine, although the overall effect on the lips is more matte; a slightly unusual effect for a balm, therefore. The emphasis is definitely on colour rather than shine.

--Scent--
None - so good if you're picky about this. The mango and shea butters are undetectable, then - to the nostrils of us mere mortals, at least.

--Texture and consistency--
It's perhaps not as super-nourishing as some dedicated balms, but you can't argue that it does make your lips feel soft and smooth. For a lipstick/lip balm lovechild it does amazingly well, and it's light and non-sticky to boot.

--Longevity--
Colour bears up for at least four or five hours, maybe even six; if you eat or drink anything in that time, however, you can expect this to be reduced, as like most lip products, it doesn't fare tremendously in standing up to the onslaught of a cup of tea.

--Value for money--
As expected, this balm competes in the same ring as Clarins, Estée Lauder, Décleor, and Philosophy, as well as lesser-known brands such as Lab Series and Primavera. However, its sheer wearability and total lack of stickiness is probably what makes it stand out ahead of some of these other products, which even with their price tag and reputation will leave you washing and picking lip gloss out of your hair.

Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Clearing Concealer

RRP: £11.50/10ml
# of available shades: 3

--What does the promo say?--
"Medicated concealer helps clear and prevent blemishes. Gentle, soothing formula provides natural-looking coverage as blemishes heal. In three skin tone shades including a green tint to visually correct redness. Oil free."

--Packaging--
The pale green packaging is, on the one hand, not very original, as it fails to distinguish the anti-blemish concealer product from others on the market. On the other hand, one can see why Clinique has kept this colour scheme, as it already falls in with the rest of this skincare range in these terms. The band of concealer shade chosen, which wraps around the squeezy tube near the screw-top lid, is a nice touch.

--Application--
Squeeze out a tiny amount, smaller than a pea, and dot onto the blemish that you wish to cover. Blend it in immediately rather than dotting everywhere required and then rubbing in, as the concealer dries quickly and can be too difficult to blend if left to rest.

--Scent--
None really.

--Appearance--
The palest shade is really quite pale indeed: most people would be better off going for the darker one. If you have especially red skin you could try the green one. However, this very limited range of shades (especially for such a high-end brand) means that most people will probably not be satisfied. My 'acid test' of a concealer is that you should be able to wear it on its own; you shouldn't need any other product to prop it up and make it look good. This concealer does not pass that test: it looks patchy and, as mentioned, due to the limited range of colours, will not look good on everyone. Once foundation or tinted moisturiser has been applied over the top, however, it looks fine: it is a heavy duty product that really does cover blemish, but this is at the expense of making the surrounding healthy skin look unnatural.

--Texture and consistency--
Very difficult to blend as it dries so quickly, which is something belied by its initial creamy consistency.

--Longevity--
Excellent. No problems here.

--Effects on the skin--
Sadly, I didn't find that this helped to really diminish acne or chase it away any more quickly. This surprised me greatly given the overall efficacy of the rest of the Anti-Blemish Solutions range.

--Value for money--
While the price isn't bad, I probably wouldn't buy this product again. Even though it lasts a long time on the skin and covers blemishes well, the number of shades available is frankly terrible, it really is a struggle to blend, and it ultimately doesn't do what it sets out to (improve skin condition). For an alternative in the same price bracket, perhaps instead try something more specialised that still hits the spot, such as concealers by Vichy or Guinot.

Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Foundation

RRP: £20/30ml
--What does the promo say?--
"New Anti-Blemish Solutions Makeup. Lightweight, oil-free, long-wearing foundation that blends gently and evenly into skin to conceal and treat current blemishes, while preventing future ones. Controls oil and balances skin's surface to maintain overall skin health. Unclogs and minimizes the appearance of pores, neutralizes skin redness. Contains skin-soothing ingredients that feel cooling upon application."

--Packaging--
The big C stamped onto the front of the plastic bottle makes this foundation instantly recognisable as a Clinique product. The metal lid (definitely metal, not plastic) is also ergonomically pleasing and is easy to open and close, and I was pleased to see, too, that they've fixed up that awful tapered nozzle since I last used a Clinique foundation: it's still tapered, but they've cut the top flat to control the amount of foundation you squeeze out, which really helps.

--Application--
Onto a clean dry face, after putting on concealer (let's face it, if you're using this product, concealer is probably your lifeline like it is mine), squeeze out a pea-sized blob of the foundation (you really only need very little, even if your skin is not great) and blend onto skin, using fingers or a foundation brush.

--Appearance--
A really smooth, creamy rather than liquid foundation.

--Scent--
None.

--Texture/consistency--
Luxurious yet light; blends easily; no lumps.

--Coverage and longevity--
Generally excellent; definitely makes you feel confident during your day, and, as promised, is long-wearing, so no need for touch-ups throughout the day.

--Effects on the skin--
I have been using this in conjunction with the Amala samples that were sent, and I have already mentioned that I saw some improvement in my skin during this time. Which product it's down to is entirely another matter. Rats. However, my mother has recently bought me some more of this product, whereas my Amala stuff will run out soon and I will not need to replace it for a while, meaning that I'll soon be able to see which product was or is responsible.

--Value for money--
At £20, this verges on the expensive side, but is not unreasonable, especially given the treatment qualities that it purports to have. Holding up in terms of coverage as well as prestige, you also need so little each time that it can easily hold its own against other similarly-priced competitors - although the fact that it does not contain an SPF might be considered a little disappointing. Easily one of the most effective and satisfying products in its price bracket.

Clinique Aromatics Elixir Solid Perfume

RRP: £35

--What does the promo say?--
"The solid perfume. A new touch of sensuality with all the magic of Aromatics Elixir. An elegant spinoff from the Aromatics Elixir collection, which can find room in even the smallest pocket, for a small perfumed touch during an evening. Its floral motif makes it an elegant and precious accessory."

--Packaging--
Satisfying and beautiful; impressive right from the start, it arrives in a small velveteen cream bag, and there is a gorgeous, simple yet classic floral design engraved into the lid. Easy to open and close (but only when you want to), the solid perfume itself is a delicate honeycomb colour that turns invisible when applied to the skin. The metal casing is of a delightful weight, reassuring you in itself of the care that has gone into ensuring the high quality of the product.

--Application--
Rub the balm onto your fingers and then transfer onto pulse points (neck, wrists, and behind ears). No problems here.

--Texture/consistency--
Quite a hard balm, but you don't need very much per application. Instantly easy to tell that this compact will last ages.

--Scent--
Initially unappealing; it's more like something that would be worn by my grandmother. However, it's worth giving this scent time to develop: it soon matures into something more interesting and multi-layered, combining tradition with modernity. It's packed so full of lovely fragrances* that you're bound to find a note in it that you like, even if it might take you a little time to do so.

--Longevity--
On the up side, this certainly packs a punch when it comes to staying power. By lunchtime it's still there and has found its harmony with your body, even if you applied it at 7.30. That's not to say it lasts all day, but just one reapplication per day would probably do it; two maximum if you really want to make an impact in the evening.

--Value for money--
Given the little you have to use each time, along with the stunning packaging and complex scent, I'd say £35 is very reasonable indeed. It's a surefire gift for women who love perfume, even if its scent is arguably not instantly lovable. You have to take the time to get to know it - but that, surely, is one of the joys of perfumery.

*for the record, those scents are: rose essence, sandalwood, camomile, oakmoss, jasmine, muguet, ylang ylang, patchouli, vetiver, musk, and amber.

Clinique Vitamin C Antioxidant Lip Smoothie Lip Colour

RRP: £13.50
# of shades available: 10

--What does the promo say?--
"We’ve squeezed in the best ingredients, like Vitamin C, and powered-up antioxidants so lips look feel their healthy best. Brushes on luscious colour, shine and moisture."

--Packaging--
Clinque continues to cash in on the fashionable click-pen, as they did with their concealer. This uses a silvery colour scheme, distinguishing between shades with a coloured band at the click wheel end. Looks modern and sophisticated overall.

--Application--
In theory this should be easy: twist the click wheel until the product appears at the pen end and paint onto lips.
However, it's a bit more complicated than that as it appears very difficult to get the right amount of product into the brush, leading to wastage. Literally as soon as you see *any* trace of the product in the bristles, stop twisting: it WILL be enough, even if it doesn't look like it will be.

--Scent--
None; the good news is that this means no slightly-dubious Playdoh smell. The bad news is that this doesn't actually remind you of a fruit smoothie.

--Appearance--
The colour I was sent (Berry Boost) seemed a bit too bright or strong on the lips for me, but I'd be more likely to put that down to my hair colour and skin tone, and a therefore unfortunate choice of shade, than to any inherent fault in the product. The shininess was certainly impressive, however, and when applied very sparingly, the colour does too.

--Texture/consistency--
A little bit sticky, I found to my regret.

--Longevity--
Average.

--Value for money--
The lack of control in the click wheel and the stickiness of the product lead me to feel that this product is perhaps a little expensive (especially considering that you only get 1.5ml for your money). If these things were improved, and if Clinique also played more on the smoothie theme in the scent, the product would be greatly ameliorated overall. It being as it is, however, for now I'd advise (for the same money, or thereabouts) going for lip glosses by Estée Lauder or Too Faced.

Clinique Deep Comfort Hand and Cuticle Cream

RRP: £14/75ml

--What does the promo say?--
"Rich, restorative cream improves moisture barrier in the skin and the condition of cuticles and nails. Keep hands moisture rich all day long."

--Packaging--
Not quite as it is in the picture - the Clinique 'C' is silvery, for instance, and the rest of the writing is orange. The lid opens well and closes securely, though, and you don't get cream collecting in the lid like in some flip-top tubes. I do definitely like the orange writing, as it serves to enliven the yellow of the lotion and make the tube stand out.

--Application--
Rub into hands as needed, or use as part of an at-home manicure.

--Appearance--
A pure, soft-looking pale yellow lotion that leaves no visible residue on the hands after use.

--Scent--
The camomile in this cream is certainly detectable, but subtle. However, this cream also contains lots of obscure ingredients, such as gentian root, birch, barley and meadowfoam, which probably also contribute to the overall high-quality and generally pleasing effect.

--Texture--
Perfectly soft, without being stiff, runny or lumpy; rubs in easily and is not greasy or oily.

--Longevity--
Has the same miracle effects as my usual choice of Atrixo, banishing dry skin patches with astonishing speed. Equally, so little is needed each time that one tube could last you a couple of winters, even with everyday use.

--Value for money--
This is definitely a great way to add a touch of luxury to your winter routine at a relatively affordable price. While plenty of other everyday hand creams, such as Atrixo, will do the job just as well, sometimes it's just nice to be able to throw a little bit of indulgence into your bag of winter essentials.

Clinique Colour Surge Eye Shadow Duo

RRP: £18
# of shades available: 11

--What does the promo say?--
"Creamy, intense colour in one stroke. Surprisingly lightweight. Ophthalmologist tested for even the most sensitive eyes. Blendable duos bring day/dusk/evening drama. The end of the quiet eye."

--Packaging--
All very pleasing: the silver case, with embossed Clinique logo, is not too heavy and as well as featuring multiple application options, also comes with a plastic tray for protecting the shadows and mixing colours, in addition to a small mirror.

--Application--
The Clinique website counsels as follows: "Apply lighter shade to eyelids, from lash line to brow bone. Use deeper shade in crease, as liner, or all over lids. Blend up and outward to desired intensity level. Clean applicator frequently for smoothest application, coverage. Remove with your favourite Clinique Makeup Remover." No problems here: the shadows are certainly blendable and the colours in the duo are well matched (I have the Blackberry Frost version).

--Texture and consistency--
As previously mentioned, there are no problems blending, and in the box at least, the shadows seem fairly durable (do not crumble or break easily, for example).

--Appearance--
All is as promised in the brief: the shades are easy to build up in order to create a subtle daytime look or a more intense night-time one. There are also colours in the range to suit about everyone while still looking natural, with peaches, pinks, browns and purples available just for starters, to create a sophisticated look for every need.

--Longevity--
This, for me, was the big downside with this product. Despite the lovely looks you are able to create, despite the compliant consistency and despite the convenient box, by lunchtime this creases and needs completely redoing, even with the use of a primer underneath. This may just be due to the oily tendency of my skin, but nevertheless, it was a disappointment in this regard.

--Value for money--
The little time that this lasts on your eyes completely blows the credibility of the £18 price tag, which is a shame, since the rest of the product stands up well and fulfils its brief. My experience of this eyeshadow coincides with my experience of Clinique products so far: while skin and body care products are generally excellent, the makeup products are usually promising but with some fatal flaw. Happily, this hasn't put me off other Clinique products yet, but nevertheless, in this case, for this price, I'd recommend eyeshadows by MAC or Guerlain instead.

Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Body Spray

RRP: £13 for 100ml

--What does the promo say?--
"Oil-free formula helps clear and prevent breakouts everywhere — back, chest, shoulders. Helps control oil, reduce the look of redness. Convenient 360-degree spray even works upside down. Perfect for hard-to-reach places. Non-staining formula."

--Packaging--
The big C clearly designates it as part of the Clinique brand, and the colour scheme of eucalyptus greens ensures that it integrates well with the rest of the Anti-Blemish range. The spray function is pretty good, working at all angles as promised, and the lid stays on securely without being too difficult to remove when you do want to use the product. The whole ensemble is made of plastic, so it's very lightweight.

--Application--
The Clinique website instructs that you should start using the product once a day initially, increasing to twice a day if required. You should spray over the affected area after cleansing (ideally with the Clinique Anti-Blemish face and body soap) and leave it to dry, and this is pretty easy to do. No problems here. Just make sure that you use this product before using any other creams or lotions as the spray can be tricky to use when your hands are on the slippery side.

--Scent--
It does unfortunately smell a little bit like bug spray, but this is not too overbearing and can easily be covered by use of a neutral-smelling body cream if it bothers you. I would still prefer a eucalyptus, aloe vera or tea tree smell though.

--Appearance--
No visible residue is left, and the spray itself is virtually invisible anyway.

--Texture/consistency--
Not sticky or greasy; just pleasant and light. I wouldn't say it's such a light mist that you could just spray it and leave it - I did feel the urge to rub it in - but it definitely doesn't take long to sink in.

--Effects on the skin--
I experienced no dryness while using this spray; indeed, skin just felt smooth and balanced. The best part is that it actually worked, too - I don't know if it's just the same toner from the range but in a spray bottle, but either way, I saw much more significant improvements on my body than on my face. The spots on my arms and shoulders have gone away and stayed away; my chest is taking longer to catch up, but I have confidence that it will follow.

--Value for money--
My spray lasted me two months, with me using it once a day some days, twice a day on others, and not at all on others. This therefore makes about £6.50 a month, which I'd say is exemplary value for money for something that is so easy to use and which works so well. I'd really like them to improve on the scent, and I'd quite like some sort of body cream to use in conjunction with it too, in order to augment the already promising results even further.

Clinique Pore Minimising Thermal-Active Skin Refiner

RRP: £22 for 75ml

--What does the promo say?--
"Heats on contact with water to open pores, dislodge debris. Then polish away skin-dulling flakes with an exclusive complex of six gentle, effective exfoliants.
Skin feels wonderfully smooth, incredibly clean. And pores look noticeably smaller—instantly, and over time."

--Packaging--
My sample is in a pink squeezy tube with a green plastic lid, but the real thing is even more promising: a daring purple tube with a classy metal screw-top lid. It fits in nicely with the Clinique brand, adorned of course with the huge trademark Clinique logo in black.

--Usage instructions--
You only need minimal moisture for this to do its job - I found that if you use it in the shower it almost melts away! So - over the sink, dampen your face using cleanser or a flannel. Squeeze out a small amount of the pore minimiser and rub into the areas that need the most attention (usually the cheeks and nose, but sometimes also the chin). Wash off using a damp flannel.

--Appearance--
The pore minimiser is a sort of duck-egg colour, and appears slightly grainy from the exfoliating beads. It's also very stiff, which can make it difficult to squeeze from the tube. On the face, no visible residue is left.

--Sensation--
It does heat up quite rapidly on contact with moisture, and it can feel slightly prickly. I wouldn't recommend using this if your skin is feeling a bit sensitive or raw for whatever reason, as it can almost hurt if you're feeling a bit fragile! However, most people shouldn't experience discomfort, and the skin feels very smooth and clean after exfoliation.

--Short-term effects--
Pores do appear visibly reduced and smoothened almost immediately after use.

--Long-term effects--
However, despite the impressive short-term results, long-term I noticed no real difference, despite using this every morning for weeks. My pores are still quite visible, both with and without makeup.

--Value for money--
The lack of long-term effects mean that I wouldn't buy this again; however, knowing the high quality of and generally excellent results provided by Clinique's products usually, I wouldn't rule out trying other products from the Pore Minimising range.

Clinique Airbrush Concealer

RRP: £15 for 1.5ml
# of shades available: 3

--What does the promo say?--
"Airbrush Concealer is a light reflecting makeup must-have. Not only does it hide shadows but it also illuminates and perfects your complexion and eye area. What are you waiting for? – get Airbrushed now!"

--Packaging--
Recently the Yves St Laurent Touche Eclat concept for packaging has boomed and while YSL has taken its classic format to new heights with a lipgloss packaged in the same way, Clinique has copied this idea for its concealer, as have other companies such as L'Oréal. The Clinique concealer is finished in its trademark organic green colouring, with the company logo and product information gracing the little pen in silver. The lid is also silver and at the other end, you'll find a twist mechanism to operate the product.

--Application--
Be patient the first time you use this, as it will take some time for the concealer to start flowing through the pen, but once you've used it a few times, it's a breeze - just twist and go.

--Texture--
Smooth and fine. Non-irritating to the skin.

--Appearance--
It blends well with any foundation and powder you happen to be using at the time, even if they aren't Clinique, and it also looks really nice when used by itself. Even if like me you have less than perfect skin, you can dab it on and still go out without feeling like an absolute tramp.

--Coverage--
Really very good, but honestly no better than L'Oréal's equivalent, which is half the price...

--Longevity--
I won't lie. It's not perfect and will need some reapplication throughout the day, but only because I think most people touch their faces during the day without necessarily meaning to. In terms of the product as a whole, I had only had it a couple of months when it ran out, so I'd say that other similar products I've used previously have definitely lasted longer overall.

--Value for money--
Not the most expensive product on the market, and it certainly puts on a good show. It is also miles better than Clinique's foundations, even though the range of available colours is somewhat limited, and thus goes some way to redeeming the brand in my eyes. However, since L'Oréal's product lasts twice as long and costs half as much for the same quality of concealer, I think I'll be sticking with that.

Clinique Glosswear For Lips

RRP: £10 for 7.3g
no. of shades available: 26

--What does the promo say?--
"Waterproof gloss that leaves lips looking and feeling moist with sheer, glossy colour. Also protects lips against environmental agressors with SPF 8 and antioxidants such as Vitamin E. Sponge-tip wand applicator provides an easy and clean application. Sheer glossy formula glides on lips for a shiny finish. Apply to lips, alone or over lipstick."

--Packaging--
A transparent hard plastic tube with all the Clinique logos and information written on it in silver block capitals, and a slender silver screw-top lid with sponge brush attached. A very nice size that's easy to fit in your handbag.

--Application--
While Clinique says you can apply this over lipstick as well as wearing it alone, I don't know that I'd recommend it myself as I think the gloss colours alone are strong enough. Still, your call. Unscrew the lid, pull out the lid/sponge brush, wipe any excess on the tube opening, and apply to your lips as often as desired.

--Appearance--
Shiny rather than shimmery, without making you look like a human disco ball. The available colours are also on the whole very natural, with the exception of a few crazier shades, so there's something there for every purpose.

--Texture/Consistency--
Slightly thicker than most other glosses, without being sticky. On the lips it feels luxurious and smooth - something to make you feel slightly special.

--Scent--
I'd say that it smells slightly waxier than most other glosses, and this is obvious when you open the tube, but on the lips the smell wears off quickly and is undetectable.

--Taste--
None.

--Longevity--
Pretty good - it withstands cups of tea and the stresses of the working day pretty well, and doesn't need to be reapplied as much as other lip glosses.

--Value for money--
Not the most expensive or the cheapest gloss on the market, but its various positive qualities make it worth the price, and I'd probably choose it over Estee Lauder's or Helena Rubinstein's glosses. It even contains conditioning agents and sunscreen, and is waterproof. Top.

Clinique Superfit Foundation

RRP: £17.50 for 30ml
no. of shades available: 12

--What does the promo say?--
"Long-wearing, constant comfort makeup. Doesn't streak or fade. Lightweight, oil-free formula allows skin to breathe; skin feels comfortable and looks fresh. Natural finish, moderate coverage. Advanced technology uses a high-performance blend of ultra-fine fibres to soak up perspiration and absorb oil without disturbing makeup. Volatile silicone and treated pigments provide long wear and colour trueness. Lightweight, oil-free formula."

--Packaging--
A nice size bottle that's pleasantly styled in keeping with the Clinique brand. However, the sloped nozzle looks great but is in reality impractical. It's very difficult to control how much foundation is dispensed and it often just sends excess foundation everywhere. They could really do with changing this.

--Application--
Assuming you haven't managed to spill foundation everywhere by now, just apply to your face in the normal way - using a brush, sponge or your fingers - to create a good base for makeup.

--Texture--
Very smooth and feels nice on the skin, though it's quite runny.

--Appearance--
I was amazed that Clinique could get colour so wrong. I bought this foundation as part of a job lot on ebay, and I assumed that 'healthy' would suit most complexions. I was therefore shocked to find that it streaked orange onto my face. I initially thought that it was merely too dark for my skin tone, so I passed it on to my sister, who has a slightly more olivey/yellowish skin tone than I do. She, however, also found it was no good, and her pronouncement was that "it's actually orange...NOBODY has skin that colour." It's possible that going through to the paler shades would make things better, but I would think that this would get worse as the foundations become darker - and the 'healthy' shade only falls midway in the range.

--Coverage--
Highlights what you want to hide, and is quite difficult to blend. Not great at all.

--Value for money--
For that money, you expect better. Buy No7 or Elizabeth Arden instead. Strangely, though, Clinique's Airbrush Concealer is excellent - which suggests that Clinique's products should only be used in moderation on your face.

Clinique Touch Blush

RRP: £14.50 for 5.3ml
no. of shades available: 6

--What does the promo say?--
" Unique, airy mousse/cream blush with blendable colour and a velvety finish. The look is smooth, soft and modern and the wear is long-term and comfortable.
• Imparts a smooth, soft glow of colour
• Blendable, long wearing, comfortable formula
• Unique texture – for fingertip application"

--Packaging--
A very small, lip-gloss sized clear pot, with a silver screw-top lid and the Clinique logo decorating the front in silver. It's easy to open and close, and it doesn't leak, but getting the protective white screen off the top each time can be a bit tricky.

--Application--
There's often some creme left on the protective screen, so you can wipe it directly onto your face if you want, or you can use your fingers. However, it's way too easy to put too much of this stuff on.

--Texture--
Smooth and creamy and very lovely.

--Appearance--
If you get it wrong, you look like Krusty the Clown. If you get it right, however, the result is a wonderfully dewy glow.

--Longevity--
Unfortunately this needs to be reapplied a few times a day, and I'd say that the Bourjois powder blushers do better in this regard.

--Value for money--
While it seems a shade on the expensive side, you need so little each time that I reckon it balances out.

The mild cleanser helps clear and prevent blemishes. The toner's gentle, effective formula exfoliates to clear dead surface cells and reduce excess oil that can lead to breakouts. The moisturiser's lightweight formula helps clear and prevent blemishes. Calms, soothes, reduces the look of redness."

--Packaging--
True to Clinique's usual form, the packaging is simple and straightforward, with the trademark Clinique C gracing the front of each bottle. All of the bottles in this range are a unisex, clinical pale green, reminiscent of surgeons' scrubs and of eucalyptus and tea tree oil. The cleanser is a pump action bottle that converts the liquid cleanser to a foam. The toner (or clarifying lotion as they like to call it) just comes in a regular plastic bottle with a screw top lid and regular opening (which is fine, but it would be nice if it had one of those discs with a hole in the top of the bottle to reduce the risk of spillage) and the moisturiser is a squeezy tube with a flip-top lid. The packaging seems fairly sturdy in all cases, none of them are confusing to operate, and they all match one another nicely.

--Application--
This is simple. Pump down the cleanser to get the amount you want (1 pump is OK, 2 is pretty good...3 I would say is more than enough, possibly too much) and rub into wet skin before immediately washing off. Dry your face, put some toner onto a cotton wool ball, and rub all over your face and neck. Afterwards, squeeze out a tiny amount of moisturiser and rub all over your face. This is quick and easy.

--Scent--
The cleanser barely has any scent, whereas the toner and moisturiser have more noticeable scents. While the moisturiser's prominent scents are tea tree and eucalyptus, the overwhelming scent of the toner is that of alcohol. While it doesn't linger on the skin, it's not the most pleasant of smells, though it does smell rather clinical thanks to this, which at least makes you feel like it works.

--Texture--
All excellent. The cleanser is smooth and bubbly, the toner is cool, and the moisturiser, although slightly watery, is without lumps.

--Sensation--
The toner in particular is very refreshing and none of the products in the 3-Step System sting. However, if you choose to branch out into other products in the anti-blemish range, the clear blemish gel can sting if applied to open spots (i.e. the ones you've just picked at!).

--Appearance--
The cleanser is a white foam with small bubbles. The toner is a clear liquid, and the moisturiser is an off-white cream/gel. None of the products leave any residue on the skin; however, the moisturiser doesn't appear to absorb too well as it leaves my skin shiny and I often have to add some de-mattifier to my skin afterwards.

--How does your skin feel?--
The skin feels smooth rather than as if it has been harshly treated, and this feeling lasts throughout the day.

--Improvement--
For this reason, I have a love-hate relationship with this skincare system. I chose to try it when I was out of the country for 8 weeks so that a) I would know exactly how long I had used it for and b) so that I could gauge my parents' reaction to my skin on my return (if they think it has improved, they will usually say so). During the 8 weeks, I myself noticed an improvement, and yet on my return to the UK, my parents said nothing about it. However, the condition of my skin seemed to fluctuate. As soon as I'd started to think I'd seen an improvement, more spots seemed to appear. While I have seen an improvement in the condition of my skin overall, I am still getting spots (mostly blackheads but also whiteheads), so their promise that the system would also serve as preventative care seems to have fallen flat.

--Value for money--
I won't lie - this is not the cheapest skincare system. However, I have seen more of an improvement than with other systems I've used, and overall I am pleased with the results. The bottles also seem to be lasting me a long time - having used the full-size bottles for 8 weeks straight, they're still half-full, and so I expect them to last me at least until November, and hopefully until Christmas. While I haven't tried all of the other anti-blemish products, I have tried the clear blemish gel, which is good value in terms of visible, speedy results, but bad value in terms of the amount you get in the (very tiny) bottle for your money.

--Other comments--
I have heard people say that despite the alliterative "kill them with kindness" claim made by Clinique, they found the twice-daily exfoliation too harsh for their skin (NB the exfoliant is a chemical exfoliant found in the toner, rather than being a manual exfoliant with bits of beach in it!). I did not find this to be the case - if you have bad acne, harsh is probably what your skin needs in order to blast those blemishes into non-existence. My favourite products are probably the toner and the clear blemish gel. Despite my love-hate relationship with this system, the results have pleased me and I would not rule out trying other products from the Clinique anti-blemish range.
