Bobbi Brown Primer Plus Protection SPF50

RRP: £24

--What does the promo say?--
"A lightweight, fast-absorbing face primer that enhances the quality of your foundation while delivering invisible broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection. Helps prevent sun damage and premature signs of aging with broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection. Applies evenly and invisibly—perfect for layering under makeup. Helps balance skin’s natural moisture level with Sodium Hyaluronate. Paraben-free; sulfate-free; phthalate-free; mineral oil-free; vegan.

--Packaging--
The sleek and unisex monochrome packaging is typical of Bobbi Brown and is sophisticated and modern. The lid twists off easily when needed and clicks closed securely.

--Application--
The website advises that you smooth it onto skin after cleansing and moisturising, taking care to avoid the eye area, prior to applying foundation. So straightforward stuff.

--Appearance--
The lotion is white, but blends invisibly into skin.

--Texture and consistency--
Smooth and blendable; feels more like a moisturiser than a sunscreen.

--Scent--
Nothing discernible; just a clean, neutral scent, despite the aromatic oils used.

--Effects on the skin--
Protects skin from the sun effectively, even fair skin that normally burns easily. Makeup also stays put. Some reviewers on the Bobbi Brown website complain that it leaves their skin looking greasy or shiny even after makeup has been applied, but I have never found this.

--Value for money--
I was sent mine for free by Bobbi Brown's PR (thanks guys!) but would spend my own money on this product: it's reliable, effective, and of high quality.

That’so All In One SPF 20-30-50+ Protective Dry Oil Spray

RRP: £18.95

--What does the promo say?--
"Stay safe in the sun with this revolutionary SPF. That'so have been working hard in or labs to make your life easier with our internationally patented SPF. Unlike a conventional SPF that only gives you the level of protection is says on the bottle, All In One gives you 3 different levels with each application. Spray on the dry oil SPF once and it gives you SPF 20. Wait 3 minutes and apply again for SPF 30. Wait a further 3 minutes and apply a final third time for SPF 50. Contains patented formula allowing increase of SPF (20/30/50) with each spray using PROGRESSIVE SPF. Contains MELANUP, a patented ingredient which allows for the production of melanin without the need for sunlight. Contains TYR-EXCEL, a tanning activator which also ensures it develops evenly. Contains anti-ageing and moisturising ingredients: avocado, jojoba oil and Vitamin E. Water resistant.

--Packaging--
The yellow and purple colour combination is vivid and striking - very unusual compared to other commercial suncreams, which tend to rely on the old faithful fallbacks of orange and white. Equally, the spray can format is unusual, as most of the usual options are squeezy bottles or tubes.

--Application--
As mentioned in the promotional materials, the number of layers you need to apply depends on the amount of protection you require - 1 layer for SPF20, 2 for SPF30 or 3 for SPF50. Just spritz over the body and rub in, waiting a few minutes between layers. Despite having to apply multiple layers for higher protection levels, I wouldn't say you run out of this any more quickly than conventional sunscreens, as the oil-based formula goes much further and wastage is minimal.

--Appearance--
An invisible oil which won't stain clothes and doesn't leave the white film of many commercial sunscreens.

--Scent--
A long-lasting, coconutty, sweet scent which is most pleasant.

--Texture and consistency--
Despite the high proportions of natural oils, this does not feel greasy at all and sinks into skin rapidly.

--Effects on the skin--
As well as effectively protecting even sensitive skins from the sun, it also moisturises well. Bonus!

--Value for money--
£18.95 for 200ml is concurrent with other high-end sunscreen ranges, such as those by P20, UltraSun, and Heliocare. Equally, it makes packing much more convenient if you don't have to carry 3 different sunscreens to the beach with you, as this does it all in one. I was sent one for free, but I'd still buy it. Good one, That'so!

Riemann P20 Once A Day Sun Protection

RRP: £13.99 per 100ml
available in SPF 15, 20, 30 and 50

--What does the promo say?--
"P20 provides 10 hours' protection from one application and is very water resistant even after swimming frequently throughout the day.Its clear, lightweight consistency ensures a silky and even coverage. Active 15 minutes after application, it's quickly absorbed, non sticky and leaves no white marks. Thanks to its long-lasting UVA and UVB filters, it helps protect against burning and the premature signs of ageing, and its once a day formula is colour and paraben-free, with no added fragrance or preservatives. Great for all the family, including the children whether you're lazing by the pool on holiday, outdoors playing sports, or just enjoying the garden at home. Perfect under make-up or moisturiser and for men with a thinning scalp."

--Packaging--
The red, orange and yellow colour scheme, particularly when juxtaposed with the white and black of the rest of the box and tube, is eyecatching and fits well with the purpose of the product. Equally, the spray mechanism is efficient and easy to use.

--Application--
Spray over body before sun exposure. Rub into skin completely.

--Appearance--
The spray is a pale yellow colour initially, but rubs in clear.

--Scent--
Unfortunately smells a bit like nail varnish remover, so can't buy into the 'fragrance free' claim.

--Texture and consistency--
Rubs in quite well, and is non-sticky as promised, although leaves a bit of a residue on the skin (albeit an invisible one).

--Effects on the skin--
Protects skin from the sun's harmful rays successfully, and as the above comment perhaps implies, it's a fairly heavy-duty product, so true to its promises, also only needs applying once a day, removing the hassle of reapplication.

--Value for money--
While sun protection is of course vital to our health, I always think that sunscreen seems like expensive stuff. Despite the high levels of technology that are likely involved in making these products, I am also inclined to believe that sunscreen producers capitalise on consumer fear - they make the product expensive because of people's concerns for their health, knowing that people will buy it anyway. This sun cream is effective stuff - it protects you from the sun, both in and out of the water, and is long-lasting, meaning you are free from the annoyance of repeated application. However, different people have different priorities, and some would rather apply sunscreen more often but use a product with a more natural basis. This can be achieved by spending less than £13.99 per 100ml, but we all have different budgets and different concerns. Nonetheless, if you're looking for something that will definitely work and last all day, P20 is a good choice.

Spa Technologies SPF45 Tinted Moisturiser

RRP: £35

--What does the promo say?--
"This silky-smooth Tinted Moisturiser protects delicate skin with fortified Antioxidants and reflects the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays with an SPF of 45. It is formulated with the added benefit of Mineral Makeup creating a flawless base and even skin tone."

--Packaging--
This convenient pump-action bottle is decorated with a double band of metallic blue, which helps to give the brand a clear identity. Blue is also an unusual packaging colour in the world of foundation and the glass bottle means that you can always see how much you have left - a definite bonus.

--Application--
After washing your face, apply over primer to commence your makeup routine. Add concealer and powder as necessary to complete your base before proceeding to other makeup.

--Appearance--
Is pale upon emerging from the bottle, but on the face provides no coverage whatsoever.

--Scent--
The cucumber extract comes through strongly, which is unusual and not at all unpleasant.

--Texture and consistency--
Smooth and creamy without weighing the skin down. It also doesn't add white streaks to your face like conventional sunscreen. In that respect it's the best sunscreen I've ever used, whether commercial or natural - it's like using a luxurious face cream rather than the traditional, medicinal 'creaming up' process before going into the sun.

--Effects on the skin--
Given the raft of natural antioxidant and sun-protecting ingredients present in this cream, I have no doubt that you could expect anti-ageing effects over time and that you would avoid sun damage as well. However, as a tinted moisturiser it does not fulfil the brief due to the non-existent coverage. However, I acknowledge that I have acneic skin, and so that this may not be suitable for my needs.

--Value for money--
If I were looking for a tinted moisturiser that offered me coverage as well as protection I would be sorely disappointed to pay £35 for this as it does not keep its promise of creating a "flawless base". However, it's the best sunscreen I've ever used - perfect for the delicate skin on the face, and natural too, with a beautiful consistency, that without doubt protects you from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Price-wise it competes well with other brands offering natural sunscreen such as BareMinerals, as well as luxury brands such as Obagi and Kiehl's. For this reason, I would definitely shell out my hard-earned for it.

Boots No7 Stay Perfect Superlight Foundation

 RRP: £14.50
# of shades available: 14

--What does the promo say?--
"Stay Perfect Superlight Foundation offers non-stop complexion perfection with a barely there feel.
You can now achieve a naturally flawless look which will stay looking perfect for up to 24 hours, and with a texture so light you’ll forget you’re even wearing it."

--Packaging--
The brown square bottle is retro and original, meaning it should stand out on the shelf when it's released on January 22nd, 2014. The white text really pops out from the squeezy bottle and is kept minimal, meaning you get the information you need to know in seconds. Furthermore, the nozzle is nicely tapered, meaning it's user-friendly and leads to little wastage.

--Application--
A little goes a long way with this. Try a penny-sized amount for starters and then go from there, applying to clean dry skin using your fingers.

--Appearance--
The shade I was sent by No7's PR was unfortunately not a great match for me, so on that score it could have been a few shades lighter. However, with 14 available I'm confident I would find one to suit me. Coverage is medium, meaning that concealer and/or powder may be required afterwards for some people.

--Scent--
Nothing too strong, but slightly clay-like, if anything.

--Texture and consistency--
Dries powder-light - as promised, there's no heaviness or stickiness. It also blends well and doesn't seem to clog the skin. It is slightly runny, though, which may bother some people.

--Longevity--
Nothing remarkable to report; no better or worse than any other foundation.

--Value for money--
I was sent mine for free by No7's PR, so didn't pay, but in truth, I'd be hesitant to pay £14.50. While the texture once applied is pleasing, it doesn't provide enough coverage for me. I can also never resist comparing brand price points and I can't help but wonder who would pay £14.50 for a No7 foundation when you can get BareMinerals or Amie mineral foundation for the same price. In fairness, No7 is not the only high street makeup brand guilty of this price inflation - others, such as L'Oréal, are also at it. In my view, they need to be less cocky with their pricing, otherwise consumers will just walk away from what is otherwise a perfectly reasonable product.

No7 Youthful CC Cream

# of shades: 2
RRP: £14.95

--What does the promo say?--
"The 'CC' in CC Cream can stand for different things for example Colour Corrector, Complete Correction or Complexion Correction. The key benefit that all CC Creams deliver is a beautifully even Complexion by correcting uneven skin colour and pigmentation. Our new No7 Youthful CC Cream is a Complexion Corrector- it's a great multi-tasking product which combines giving you a beautifully even skin tone with anti-aging benefits. Just like our BB Creams it's great for those lighter coverage days or as an additional beautifier alongside your normal foundation/ skincare routine."

--Packaging--
The white and silver combination provides a futuristic finish and the squeezy tube and screw-top lid are both practical.

--Application--
Apply to clean dry skin. Theoretically, concealer, powder and moisturiser shouldn't be necessary, but a primer may be necessary due to its sheer coverage (more of which below).

--Appearance and coverage--
Unfortunately, as this only comes in two shades, the fact that the lighter of the two shades does suit me is probably down to luck. As mentioned, the coverage is quite sheer, meaning that a) you may need a primer to prevent it from sliding off, and b) if you have blemishes, concealer and powder may still be necessary for you. However, it does add radiance, which is important for deflecting attention away from blemishes and fine lines.

--Scent--
Nothing discernibly bothersome.

--Texture and consistency--
This product has a smooth consistency that blends well. As it does only provide light coverage, I tend to apply two coats, and the product stands up to this very well, with this not leading to a sticky or caked-on feeling in the least.

--Longevity--
As mentioned, it depends what you wish to apply before or afterwards. On its own, I suspect this wouldn't do too well.

--Effects on the skin--
A non-irritating product, but it doesn't seem to have any especial healing qualities either.

--Value for money--
Tricky one. It's not a terrible product in itself, but I struggle to see what additional purpose or gap in the market this serves beyond what's already done by tinted moisturisers. My research earlier this year showed that CC creams should specifically not only do the work of BB creams in terms of actively healing blemishes, but should also 'correct' (hence the C in the name) by way of having different tints available for different purposes, such as green to neutralize redness, pink to counteract dullness, and so on. Unfortunately, as with many Western BB creams, this perfectly serviceable product has just jumped on the latest fashionable bandwagon by slapping a new label on what is essentially just a tinted moisturiser, and using it as an excuse to hike up the price tag*: I wouldn't mind, but No7's tinted moisturiser is over £3 cheaper. My advice? Buy that instead (it even comes in 3 shades instead of the CC cream's mere two).

*Should probably say that No7 is not the only brand guilty of this. Most Western CC creams are just overpriced tinted moisturisers with a different name. Buy Asian instead to get the genuine article.

Dr Jart+ Regenerating BB Cream

RRP: £14

--What does the promo say?--
"This professional formula, containing cutting-edge active ingredients, covers and conceals imperfections whilst helping skin regenerate. Featured benefits include skin regeneration, sun protection and nourishing properties whilst helping to eliminate age spots and blemishes. Contains suncream to help protect the skin, macadamia ternifolia seed oil to lubricate the surface of the skin, snail secretion filtrate to hydrate and moisturise, and simmondsia chinensis seed oil to calm and smooth out the skin. Moisturises, protects and corrects, thanks to treatment serum and sunscreen, with no foundation needed. Skin looks smooth, perfect and natural."

--Packaging--
Mine was a free sample, so I haven't had the chance to try the full version of this plastic flip-top tube, but I love the edgy silver-and-black colour scheme.

--Application--
Skip moisturiser if you want and just go straight for this - the macadamia and jojoba oils already moisturise perfectly. If you really want to use foundation primer as well, you can, but again it's probably unnecessary. Just rub a 10p-sized amount between your hands and smooth onto the face. Complete with concealer and powder if desired.

--Appearance--
This is a perfect match for my skin tone, but as Asian BB creams tend to be quite pale by default, it won't suit everyone. Unfortunately BB creams tend to go for a 'one size fits all' approach.

--Scent--
Nothing discernible, in all honesty - not even the seed oils.

--Texture and consistency--
Perfectly smooth and blendable.

--Effects on the skin--
The sun protection factor in this works brilliantly, so there's no need for extra sunscreen to avoid burning - and at factor 30, it's suitable for even sensitive skin. Sunscreens also have proven anti-ageing properties long-term, so that's something that you'll see the rewards of in 20 years' time if you use an SPF on your face regularly. More immediately, good natural coverage is provided, although you'll want to finish off with concealer for any particularly bad spots. Unfortunately my free sample was so small that I wasn't able to see how far it improves skin conditions such as acne even over a few days or weeks, but I can believe that it would. Oiliness is reduced, meaning you don't feel like your face is melting and your makeup sliding off even in hot weather.

--Longevity--
Does better than most tinted moisturisers and as well as most foundations.

--Value for money--
At £21 exclusively at Boots, this competes favourably with high-end Western BB creams from brands such as Clinique and Bobbi Brown. Dr Jart is a genuinely Korean brand, so you know you're getting the real deal with this. The excellent results it provides in terms of coverage and sun protection means I'd buy it again - and with Boots offering 33% off several Dr Jart skincare products at present, it currently poses even better value for money if you can bag it for the discounted price of £14.

Etude House BB Magic Cream

available for £9-£12 online
available in oily skin and dry skin variants

--What does the promo say?--
"Contains skin soothing and nourishing Aloe Vera, Chamomile, Madecassol and Centella Asiatica. Promotes flawless complexion with a natural 'No Makeup Look'. BB Magic Cream offers natural looking coverage that nourishes, corrects skin complexion and protects against sun damage."

--Packaging--
Despite appearances in the picture above, the box is actually a very shiny metallic blue, with the tube itself being pale blue. Comes with a screw top lid.

--Application--
'Pat' onto the skin rather than rubbing or blending in the same way as a foundation or tinted moisturiser. Don't ask me why, but it does seem to make a difference with BB creams in terms of how the final result looks. This is easy though; it doesn't take long to get the hang of it. Finish with concealer and powder if you wish. Equally, some people like to precede the application of BB creams with primer, but this really isn't necessary, making this a great product for express makeup routines. A little goes a long way, so don't go mad with the quantity.

--Appearance and coverage--
Can initially appear dull and lacking in coverage, but just give it a couple of minutes to adapt to your skin tone. Greater radiance is apparent quickly, and while I wouldn't say this conceals blemishes 100%, appearance is still much improved. There aren't that many shades available, though, and these tend to be at the paler end of the spectrum, which could disappoint some (although what I have works perfectly for me).

--Texture and consistency--
Not especially stiff. Almost verging on being too runny - if your fingers are already warm it will begin to melt almost immediately upon contact, so work quickly. This is strange, though, given how long it lasts once it's on your face.

--Longevity--
The strange part is that its runny, almost melty quality, once the BB cream is on your face, it will survive even hot summer evenings completely unscathed. Will not rub off or fade on your face in the course of a normal night out.

--Effects on the skin--
Like all good BB creams, this has a good SPF (of 30 in this case) and contains several other positive natural ingredients to improve skin condition over time. It also contains madecassol, which is known to treat wounds and scars. This all suggests that provided you're not allergic to any of these ingredients, you should see a good improvement over time. The differentiation between oily and dry skin types is encouraging, too (I have the oily skin version).

--Value for money--
Mine was bought for me as a present, but I would still pay what's being charged online for this (£9-£12 depending on retailer, including postage). It provides good coverage rain or shine, doesn't require primer as backup to help keep it in place, and is packed full of good stuff to improve skin condition over time. Would definitely purchase a new tube when this one runs out, as this is without doubt comparable to the best of Western BB creams (Clinique, Bobbi Brown...) with a much lower price tag.

Green People Scent-Free Soft Lips SPF8

RRP: £4.95

--What does the promo say?--
"A natural lip balm which keeps your lips soft and protected. Conditions and protects, giving a natural sheen. Excellent for dry, sore and chapped lips. Gives SPF8 UV protection. ‘Scent Free' formulation ideal for sensitive lips (very mild taste from natural plant oils used as the product base). Contains organic coconut, cupuaçu, vitamin E, and berry wax. Green People Scent Free Soft Lips SPF8 is made without artificial perfumes, alcohol (ethyl alcohol, ethanol), parabens, petrochemicals, colourants, lanolin and phthalates to bring you the purest lip salve that nature can offer. 65% certified organic ingredients. Suitable for vegetarians and vegans."

 --Packaging--
A small white plastic tube that'll fit right in even the smallest pocket. The orange band is distinctive and cheerful and the screw-top lid proves secure and hygienic.

--Application--
The website advises applying a small amount of Scent Free Soft Lips only, and it's true that you'll only need a pea-sized amount. You also can apply from the tube to your lips directly, with no need to go via your fingers. Wear alone, or over lipstick for a subtle gloss effect.

--Appearance--
An opaque cream-coloured gel, which turns into an attractive sheen on the lips.

--Scent--
As promised, it's completely scent-free. They warn that a mild taste is possible, but I couldn't detect it.

--Texture and consistency--
While it appears slightly thick and lumpy, it still comes out of the tube easily without control being lost or product being wasted. On the lips, it's completely smooth and without stickiness. Definitely the love child of gloss and balm; Green People should definitely make colour versions!

--Effects on the skin--
Moisturises lips, protects from cold winds and sunshine, and is definitely scent-free. Top stuff.

--Value for money--
At £4.95, it's not the cheapest balm out there, but it's probably the cheapest it can be given the high quality of the ingredients and the brand's ethical credentials. The price means it's also competing with brands such as Burt's Bees, Avene, and Cowshed, meaning it's appropriately valued at worst and excellent value at best. Would recommend.

17 BB Cream SPF25

RRP: £6.99
# of shades available: 3

--What does the promo say?--
"17 Blemish Balm BB Cream. All in one magic make up. Improves skin within 4 weeks."

--Packaging--
The black and yellow colour scheme has fun, summery, "bumble-bee" type connotations which make the whole thing seem very cheerful. Block capitals on the front of the box and tube keep information to a minimum while making sure you know all that is vital. However, further details are forthcoming on the back of the box and tube, more so than on the Boots website (ultimately the product promises to prevent breakouts, minimise pores, control oil, give a flawless finish, conceal imperfections, and protect skin thanks to the SPF). The squeezy tube is easy to use, ensuring that no product is wasted, and the lid clicks closed securely.

--Application--
Pat the cream gently onto clean dry skin. Finish with powder if desired.

--Appearance--
This BB cream gives far better coverage than most other Western products of this type: rather than being sheer, it offers full concealment of blemishes, and despite there only being three shades available, I found that the 'light' version sent to me by 17's PR was a perfect match for my skin tone. In fact, coverage was so good that I often found myself bypassing the concealer that I keep by the side of my bathroom sink - so if this product can streamline my makeup routine, so much the better! Delivers a flawless finish as promised, although whether or not a product minimises the appearance of pores is always going to be difficult to measure.

--Scent--
Scentless, I'd say.

--Texture and consistency--
Very creamy and luxurious without being heavy or bogging the skin down. A little also goes a really long way and it's very easy to blend, too.

--Longevity--
Lasts quite well throughout the day, although could perhaps do with one touchup after 5-6 hours of wear. Still, at this price I'm not complaining; many more expensively-priced products do worse.

--Effects on the skin--
Thanks to the SPF, this product stood up to the South of France sun for a week straight, meaning I didn't have any sunburn or redness on my face. I also did notice an improvement in my skin condition over four weeks' use, as 17 said I would. A wonderful product!

--Value for money--
Excellent. It works brilliantly and is priced modestly in line with competing products made by Garnier, Maybelline and Superdrug - and can even give more expensive brands a run for their money. I would definitely purchase a replacement tube as soon as this one runs out. My faith in 17 is restored!

Blistex MoistureMax

RRP: £2.49

--What does the promo say?--
"A refreshing and super-hydrating lip balm that contains soft melting moisture beads. Each visible bead contains Shea Butter and Aloe Vera for intensive, long lasting, super-hydration from first application."

--Packaging--
The transparent tube means you can always see how much is left of the pale blue gel, which has dark blue particles suspended in it. The dark blue decoration at one end of the tube is a nice touch and the flat applicator is practical and easy to use.

--Application--
Use whenever your lips need revitalising, say Blistex. No problems here: just twist off the lid, squeeze the tube lightly, and massage the gel onto your lips with your fingers or the tube applicator, or simply by rubbing your lips together.

--Appearance--
The blue of the gel may strike fear into the hearts of some, but there's really no need - this gives a great natural sheen without making you look frostbitten. The dark blue moisture beads also absorb instantly and invisibly for an added hit of hydration.

--Scent--
This lip balm is scented with a blue raspberry flavour, which I love - but then again it always was my favourite Slush Puppy flavour. It's also not too overpowering, meaning it shouldn't put off too many people, but does mean it isn't as unisex as some of Blistex's more medicinal products.

--Texture and consistency--
In spite of my description above of this product as a 'gel', it's silkier and more velvety than this, making it feel like a really luxurious product. It's not at all slimy or sticky, and it sinks into the lips perfectly.

--Effects on the skin--
Rehydrates lips significantly, making them feel smoother for days after use even if the product is not used daily. This means your tube should last longer as a result too - great for moneysavers.

--Value for money--
As mentioned above, this product is terrific value for money. The long-lasting effects of the product combined with the low RRP mean one tube should last anyone a long time, and its utilitarianism (don't forget it has an SPF of 15 too) combined with a hint of luxury make it one of my new faves. Who can resist a product that does it all? Well done, Blistex.

Jane Iredale Powder-Me SPF Dry Sunscreen

RRP: £29.54
available in 3 shades: Translucent, Golden and Tanned

--What does the promo say?--
"Helps prevent sunburn and sun induced skin damage. Powder-Me SPF is an all over face and body powder which protects from UVB and UVA rays. With an SPF 30, it's an essential in the fight against the merciless damage caused by the sun. Because this remarkable sunscreen is a powder, it doesn't run where you don't want it – such as your eyes! It also starts working immediately. No wait for chemicals to be absorbed by the skin. Just layer the light powder on for immediate protection. And it's so easy to use. Powder-Me SPF is packaged in an innovative dispenser that ensures quick and even coverage. Apart from its active ingredient of titanium dioxide, one of the ingredients in this state-of-the-art sunscreen is a natural clay dried in the sun and completely free of contaminants and atmospheric pollutants. The ancient clay also contains minerals that nourish and calm the skin, helping sooth inflammation from too much sun exposure."

--Packaging--
This is a clear plastic pot with a screw-top opening for refills, which leads to a sponge for everyday application. In addition, there is a push-on lid which comes complete with its own mirror in the top. There are several advantages to this type of packaging: the transparent pot means you can see when you're running low, and the sponge is very good for targeted application (Italian makeup brand Pupa makes a similar pot which you can use to apply blusher). The fact that you can refill it is also excellent news and the mirror is very handy. However, I feel that Jane Iredale would do well to sell a brush version alongside this to help cover larger areas of the body, such as the legs, more quickly (Body Shop does something similar to this, and Colorescience's Sunforgettable mineral sunscreen also comes in this format).

--Application--
One is instructed to apply liberally and evenly over face and body, topping up every 2 hours (plus after swimming, perspiring or towel drying). So fairly standard across the sunscreen market. However, as mentioned above, I found that the sponge applicator made this easy only on smaller areas of the body (such as face, arms, hands and feet) and took much longer on larger areas (such as legs, chest and stomach).

--Appearance--
This will obviously depend on the shade you choose. Pick translucent if you are pale, the brand new Golden if you have an olive skin tone, or Tanned if your skin is darker than this. I found that Golden looked great on my arms, but was too dark for my legs and face. Some of us may need two! The sunscreen also appeared patchy on larger areas of skin due to the design of the applicator.

--Scent--
None. Perhaps a little bit of the sponge, if anything (a new-fabric kind of smell) but generally not chemical or artificially fragranced.

--Texture and consistency--
Being a mineral powder foundation, it's powder-light and you can dab it easily onto the skin. No signs of irritation or clogged pores were experienced while using the product.

--Effects on the skin--
As this product is endorsed by the Skin Cancer Foundation as providing effective UVA and UVB protection, it should come as no surprise that my skin was adequately protected from the sun and did not burn :)  Yay :)

--Value for money--
At nearly £30 this is expensive for a sunscreen, and it doesn't even have the consolation of refills being available (meaning you have to shell out the whole £30 each time you run out. However, the price is in line with other mineral companies - BareMinerals' powder sunscreen, for instance, is £25 (although at least that one comes in brush form). While there are clear advantages - the fact that there are no white streaks or stickiness as with some traditional suncreams, or the fact that its texture and consistency wouldn't change over time in the same way as a cream - it is a time-consuming way of applying sun cream and some people may feel happier sticking to use of this on their face and arms, while using a different sunscreen that's easier to apply to larger areas. It's a high-quality product, but its major design flaws (sponge applicator, no refills) need to be resolved to make it even more appealing to the mass market.

Piz Buin Tan and Protect Tan Intensifying Sun Lotion

RRP: currently £8.49 at Tesco
available in 3 SPFs: 6, 15, and 30; also available in the form of an oil spray

--What does the promo say?--
"The non greasy and non sticky formula of the NEW PIZ BUIN® Tan & Protect™ Tan Intensifying Sun Lotion intensely moisturises your skin, which helps prevent peeling and contributes to a longer lasting tan. PIZ BUIN® Tan & Protect™ Tan Intensifying Sun Lotions are sweat and water resistant. Combines UVA/UVB HELIOPLEX™ sun filters with Melitan, which helps enhance your skin's own natural tan. So now you can build a gorgeous, natural tan without compromising on your level of protection."

--Packaging--
The gorgeous dark brown and gold colour scheme really evokes ideas of the sun and summer, and stands out on the shelf compared to the bright primary-coloured packaging that's often available from other brand. The plastic squeeze-bottle and tapered nozzle also makes it easy to decant the lotion into smaller bottles for travel as well as making it simple to apply directly onto skin.

--Application--
Simply rub into clean dry skin before sun exposure, and reapply after activities such as swimming. The lotion absorbs quickly and is non-greasy, making it pleasant to use.

--Appearance--
A white cream that leaves no visible residue on the skin (so no white streaks as can be seen after using some sunscreens). Almost more like a body moisturiser than a sunscreen!

--Scent--
Nothing out of the ordinary here; just like an ordinary sunscreen, but not heavily scented.

--Texture and consistency--
As mentioned, this absorbs well, with there being none of the stiffness, stickiness or difficulty blending that can occur with other sunscreens. Intensely moisturising. In short, a delight.

--Effects on the skin--
I was pleasantly surprised to see (after perhaps not really believing it would work) that I got a good, natural tan on my legs while using this for only a couple of hours. No looking like you've been tangoed with this! Tested during one of Cardiff's rare moments of sun, it also protected skin well from the sun (no burning) and kept skin moisturised too (no peeling, dryness or tightness).

--Value for money--
The oil is slightly cheaper at £7.99 from Tesco at the time of writing (although Boots has it on for £17.99, so don't know what's going on there), but either way I think both products represent great bang for your buck. Sunscreen is expensive anyway: with one or two exceptions (Boots Essentials and some Soltan products), you are basically looking at £6.49 just as a starting point. Piz Buin is also on BOGOF currently at Boots, so is even better value. Their price point seems perfect, especially given that Simple sunscreens are more expensive than this (£10.99, Simple? Come on). Given that it feels more like a moisturiser than a traditional sunscreen, and not only protects your skin from the sun but also makes your tan look even better, it seems to me to be a fantastic summer purchase. The fact that it's available in multiple formats (the PR at Piz Buin tells me that it simply comes down to what you prefer to use; it's not that the oil is more effective than the lotion or vice versa) and in multiple SPFs serves as yet more selling points. This is all despite my initial reservations about how the product works (see below). My only criticism would be the lotion's lack of availability in major outlets as yet (the oil spray is much easier to get hold of), but I am sure this will change soon. In short, would purchase again.

--Other comments--
I was a little baffled/worried by how the product works initially, but having done some research I am now feeling a little more relaxed. To be honest I think Piz Buin should include a little leaflet with each of their tan accelerating sunscreens to explain this to consumers. The Piz Buin products, and other similar products, are designed to produce synthetic melanin in the skin (as do oral products like Oenobiol Solaire). Melanin is secreted by the skin to protect your skin from the sun. This makes your skin darker. Melanin production is stimulated by the melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH). Companies therefore want to make products that either contain this hormone or at least replicate its action. Synthetic melanin is not known to increase cases of skin cancer and works also by helping to limit the breakdown of melanin, resulting in skin darkening and the tan lasting longer. This only significantly affects the surface layer of the skin and is very temporary.

Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow!

 RRP: £24.50/30ml

--What does the promo say?--
"Hello…it’s flawless time! Our new oil-free brightening liquid foundation builds from light to medium coverage for a natural complexion you can believe in. It’s you…just more luminous & healthy looking.
  • broad-spectrum SPF 25 PA+++ protection**
  • oil-free formula
  • natural finish
  • hydrating benefits
  • light-diffusing properties
  • available in 9 shades
**What does PA+++ mean? SPF stands for the protection grade of the UVB filter. PA stands for the protection grade of the UVA filter. The highest standard of sun protection rating is the three-star PA rating. Our foundation has three stars, which translates to the highest protection."

--Packaging--
Perhaps in a slight departure from Benefit's vintage theme, the font used on this bottle suggests something even more glamorous. The writing on the pump-action plastic bottle is easy to read and gives you all the information you need as well. The opaque plastic adds mystique but still enables you to see how much you have left; the white background also makes it seem clean and simple while the bright pink font pops off the bottle.

--Application--
Benefit recommends starting with their Porefessional primer all over your face for an even application, but any primer will do (I've been using their brightening That Gal of late, alternating with Witch's primer). I also apply eyelid primer before going on with the foundation. A pea-sized blob will do your whole face, and application is easy: just smear it on for effortless blending before finishing off with concealer and powder if needed.

--Appearance and coverage--
I'm using their palest shade, Ivory (what a surprise) and for me it's a perfect fit. I wouldn't say that I could go out with *only* this on, but then again I've had acne problems for years (although it seems that it is starting to clear up now - yay!). Even then, only a light touch with concealer and powder is needed for that sought-after flawless appearance. For others, it's a medium to light coverage and should be sufficient alone if you don't have any major skin problems. Gives a dewy finish that can be desirable, but is probably not too good for those with very oily skin who are seeking a more mattifying look (again, powder helps with this).

--Scent--
Nothing discernible, in truth: if you don't like those chalky or otherwise chemical smells that can be present in foundation you'll be fine here.

--Texture and consistency--
Surprisingly runny for something containing an SPF, perhaps even overly so - although this is certainly better than it being too sticky or difficult to blend.

--Longevity--
Lasts quite well on the skin, although powder touch-ups can be needed every now and again.

--Value for money--
I always baulk at Benefit's prices as it can seem rather a lot for an initial outlay. HOWEVER - the products always last a long time as a little goes such a long way. On the whole, with a few exceptions, they are of high quality. Having a high SPF in a product is always a good thing (even if it's not exactly the same as using regular sunscreen). It's a good colour match in this case, lasts well, and offers a youthful finish, as well as being hydrating and oil-free so as to not aggravate the skin. Even though I bought mine in the US on this occasion (where it retails at £21, rather than £24.50), I would consider paying full price for this one.
