celebrate Chanel N°5

Launched today at http://www.chaneln5.com/ , the fragrance's latest campaign consists of a short film starring Audrey Tautou (of Amélie fame) and celebrates not only Chanel N°5 and its iconic history but also its newest version, l'Eau Première (which came after the Eau de Toilette and the Eau de Parfum). Described as a fresher, easier version of the original Chanel N°5, it's aimed at women who loved the original and yet found it still didn't work for them.

May 5 2009 has therefore been designated by the city of New York as Chanel N°5 Day, and for one week only (May 5-11) a stretch of Fifth Avenue will become Avenue N°5. The ad itself commemorates the fragrance successfully, simultaneously embodying its romance, its femininity, its gutsiness, its glamour, its mystery, and its coexistent worldliness and otherworldliness. Thanks to the good folks at Chanel, I now have a whopping 150ml bottle of the Eau Première to lavish upon myself (will report back asap).

For now, however, check out the ad itself here: http://www.chaneln5.com/en-gb/#/the-film , and enjoy the behind-the-scenes clips here:

Chanel Coco Mademoiselle

RRP: from £51.99 for the eau de parfum (available in 50ml and 100ml)
Also available in eau de toilette - £25 for 100ml from www.tyrers.com

--What does the promo say?--
"A floral jasmine-rose accord, light as a petal. COCO MADEMOISELLE embodies all the modernity of the spirit of Mademoiselle CHANEL. Bold and resolute, she proved that elegance can be found in simplicity, and understated luxury. These values are shared by women in the twenty-first century, and restated by CHANEL in COCO MADEMOISELLE."

--Packaging--
Although I've only trialled this on a sample basis, I have confidence just from my sample that the real thing is nice: it just LOOKS sleek. The Chanel logo oozes elegance and frankly does all the work on its own.

--Application--
Spritz behind ears, onto wrists, and perhaps a little onto the breastbone for maximal yet subtle impact.

--Scent--
Deep and yet floral without being too 'old' or overpowering. It is charming, beguiling, romantic, and suitable for young women as well as those who are more mature. It is also a clearly high-quality scent - there are many inferior imitations on the market - and while it has been available for some time, it corresponds well to the image projected by the use of Keira Knightley in Coco Mademoiselle's latest advertising campaign (capturing the qualities of beauty, youth, timelessness, and something slightly showy and high-class).

--Longevity--
It's difficult for any scent to last well on the wrists, assuming that like any normal person you are washing your hands a few times a day. However, this lingers on other parts of the body (e.g. behind the ears) until night-time.

--Value for money--
There's no denying that the prices for this are slightly out of reach for many. However, the price of the eau de toilette and the bath soap are both encouraging and allow most people to buy into this delightful fragrance. It's also worth remembering that as well as buying into a highly luxurious and world-famous brand, you are also buying a high-quality fragrance that stays the distance (not just day to day, but also across the years). Definitely one for the Christmas list.

Chanel Chance Gentle Shower Foam

RRP: £32

--What does the promo say?--
"Creamy mousse texture in lightest shade of pink. Easy to rinse off & leaves skin subtly perfumed. Contains active moisturising ingredients & protective-barrier agent. Gently cleanses skin & keeps it soft & supple."

--Packaging--
All pink and silver girly wonder. The top pulls off, but luckily secures easily and faithfully. Conforms very well with Chanel's overall image: sophisticated, feminine, and not too in-your-face while still remaining distinctive.

--Application/usage instructions--
Pull off the lid, and press very gently on top of the white plastic dispenser part. I say 'gently' as the foam expands greatly once expelled from the canister, so less is most definitely more. Rub all over body (though I wouldn't recommend going near your ladybits with this - it's too strongly perfumed for that), and then wash off.

--Scent--
Flowery but with depth. It also fills the whole bathroom - the first time I used it, one of my flatmates could even smell it in the corridor. It really has something unique about it and should appeal to both girls and women of all ages.

--Appearance--
No residue is left on the skin, but the foam itself is a light, creamy pink.

--Texture/consistency--
Really light and foamy, and yet still creamy and luxurious - it in no way feels thin or pathetic. Skin afterwards feels smooth and well cared-for.

--Longevity--
Varies - sometimes it lasts until you go to bed, while sometimes it only lasts until lunchtime.

--Value for money--
I wasn't expecting it to be as expensive as it is (even though it is Chanel). However, one canister lasts aaaaaaaaages and it keeps really well too, even when you don't use it for a while. It is also an absolute joy to use and you are buying into one of the biggest, most well-known, most luxurious brands in the world. At this price, though, you may be into Christmas wishlist territory, but it is definitely worth asking for.

Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour

RRP: £13 for 13ml
no. of shades available: 22

--What does the promo say?--
"Le Vernis from Chanel offers a wide colour variety, from the most elegant and classic to the latest and trendiest shades. It is chip-resistant, thanks to an original, state-of-the-art, exclusive-to-Chanel formula, with naturally strengthening and protecting bioceramides. One last reason to adore it? The patented no-spill bottle, with a 'built-in wiper system' - so you apply the perfect amount of this toluene-free polish, with every sweep of the brush."

--Packaging--
Very square, good-looking, modern glass bottle, with a black plastic lid bearing the Chanel logo, which all comes in a black box with white product information on it, and a gold stripe at the bottom. It soon becomes apparent, though, that the black square smoothly-finished lid is just a shell for a ridged, cylindrical lid that's easier to turn and open.

--Application--
All as usual. Open the lid, pull out the brush, wipe on the edge of the opening to avoid excess, and apply at least 2 coats to the nails after a base coat, allowing plenty of time to dry in between.

--Texture--
Smooth, and a little bit watery, but not too bad.

--Appearance--
One coat is not sufficient - two or more are definitely needed. While in the bottle the colour appears definite and vibrant, this doesn't translate well to the nails, which is rather disappointing. It also appears slightly streaky after the first coat has been applied, though the application of a second coat improves this. However, there is a slight shimmer to it, which is nice and subtle.

--Does it do what it promises?--
Not by a million miles. From Chanel's own description, you'd think the nail varnish would last perfectly well on its own, but even with a base coat and a top coat, it couldn't withstand my part-time job, where I am constantly having to remove trays and faff about with keys and thus constantly knocking my nails. Whether it would withstand normal day-to-day business is something different, though the evidence doesn't fare too well on that front either. I applied the varnish on a Thursday while travelling on a train to meet friends. The journey was long and there was plenty of time for all coats of varnish to dry. I had a perfectly normal day on the Friday (i.e. I was not at work or undertaking any kind of activity that was rough on my hands), but then on the Saturday I returned to work. As soon as I undertook any kind of activity using my hands, the nail varnish simply didn't last (and I work in a jeweller's - I'd say there are far more strenuous activities!). Therefore, in my book, this nail varnish in no way does what it says it will.

--Value for money--
I think you've already guessed what I'm going to say here. There are simply far better nail colours out there that last far better than this one does. The only thing got going for it is the texture and the wide range of colours, but these qualities can only redeem this nail colour to a certain extent. I can only recommend that you choose something else for your nails, but don't write off Chanel completely - it quite often comes up trumps.
