Molton Brown Vintage With Elderflower Bath and Shower Gel

RRP: £22

--What does the promo say?--
"Explore the sparkling fragrance of Molton Brown's Vintage 2016 with Elderflower Bath & Shower Gel, inspired by a cool cellar of vintage cuvée. Infused with English Elderflower Extract, the luxurious body wash gently refreshes and softens skin, whilst enveloping the body with notes of uplifting Petitgrain, Grapefruit and Vetiver for a truly magical bathing experience. Housed in a limited edition bottle with a wine bottle style label. Featuring the finest ingredients from a vineyard in Champagne-Ardenne, this luxurious lotion evokes the extravagant spirit of the festive season."

--Packaging--
The detachable jingle bells near the opening are a festive delight that accentuate the glitter in the shower gel itself, which is visible through the transparent plastic bottle. The golden label is chic and in keeping with the celebratory champagne feel.

--Usage--
Press the top of the lid downwards and then squeeze the bottle to expel the shower gel. Lather up under the shower and then rub over wet skin as normal before rinsing.

--Appearance--
A translucent cream gel with gold glittery particles that leave a delicate sparkly sheen on the skin - perfect for Christmas time (yes, some of us do start thinking of our gifts in August - what of it?).

--Scent--
The vetiver grounds the scent without being overpowering, just as the grapefruit subtly lifts it, but the champagne is the dominant flavour (NB don't eat it!). Elderflower is also delicately detectable; overall, a well-balanced and sophisticated fragrance.

--Texture and consistency--
The gel is thick and luxurious without being heavy or sticky; this lathers to a fine white foam that washes off when you want it to.

--Effects on the skin--
Apart from the shine from the embedded glitter (which can last beautifully depending on how liberally you've used it in the shower), skin is left feeling soft and moisturised.

--Value for money--
At £22 this is only a little more expensive than Molton Brown's usual shower gels of the same size and would make a beautiful upscale Christmas present for anyone who's already a fan of the brand - or even someone who's a Molton Brown newbie. At the launch you were even able to personalise the label with the recipient's name, and I hope this will be available to the mass market also. A gorgeous gift with which to ring in the new year.

Molton Brown Global Heroes

--What does the promo say?--
"London via the World
Our star performers return from exotic climes to celebrate in London, our home. Including five of our bath & shower gel stars all wrapped up in the colours they deserve.
Unite. Energise. Celebrate.
Contains 100ml sizes of:
Re-charge Black Pepper Bodywash
Relaxing Yuan Zhi Bath & Shower
Vitalising Vitamin AB+C Bath & Shower
Paradisiac Pink Pepperpod Bath & Shower
Warming Eucalyptus Bath & Shower"

--Packaging--
Each of the shower gels comes in a hard transparent plastic bottle, with a raised design towards the top of the bottle. Writing on the bottle is kept minimal, with the shade varied according to the shower gel colour. The screw-top lid is decorated with a nice silver effect that's sure to add a touch of sophistication to any bathroom. The 100ml sizes are perfect for travel - you can voyage safe in the knowledge that they won't leak on the way. They are together presented in a gold, silver and bronze gift box (although the set I was sent by Molton Brown's PR didn't come with this).

--Usage instructions--
Lather onto wet skin under the shower, or run under a flow of hot water for a sumptuous bubble bath. Relax, then rinse.

--Appearance--
Each of the gels is a different colour in keeping with its theme and ingredients. Harmoniously, the Vitamin AB+C gel is a cheerful yellow, while the pepper version is a dark brown, almost verging on black. The pink pepperpod version speaks for itself, while the eucalyptus shower gel is green. None of these leave any visible residue on the skin after rinsing off the white lather that's created.

--Scent--
The gels smell exactly as would be expected from their ingredients, and are rich, high-quality, and natural incarnations of these to boot. The only perhaps less known scent - the yuan zhi root, for the "London via China" shower gel - smells, rest assured, deliciously fragrant, striking an ideal balance between sweet and musky, and is more intense than its body cream counterpart, which I also tested recently. The Vitamin AB+C gel and eucalyptus gel are to be commended for their vibrancy, and the pepper gels for their spice. With the exception of the black pepper gel, which smells decidedly masculine, all are quite unisex and can be used by the whole family.

--Texture and consistency--
I have already mentioned the fine yet luxurious white foam that's created by lathering up under the shower (I don't have a bath enabling me to test it in this form, though - boo hiss). Neither too runny nor too viscous, and definitely not sticky, the gels make it easy to get a good lather going and deliver a consistently pleasant performance as a result. Easy to rinse.

--Value for money--
At £36 for 5 shower gels, you have a convenient travel product that allows you to try out 5 different scents for £7.20 each. Such prices are on a par with high-end brands as diverse as Hugo Boss, Green People and Korres, which I feel is a good price point in the sense of reflecting the quality of the ingredients used and overall product result. However, as all of these gels are available in 300ml formats at £18 each, it's clear that the full sizes are better value (at the travel/gift rate of £7.20 per 100ml, you'd be paying around £21.50 for a 300ml bottle instead). It's easy, though, to see why the premium is there: the extra packaging involved in gift or travel sets has to be paid for somehow, and consumers are usually willing to pay extra for the luxury of choice or convenience. This kit fulfils those functions easily - but once you've chosen the scent you prefer, definitely go for the full-size bottle for optimal value and keep your eyes open for Molton Brown's sales.

Molton Brown Relaxing Yuan Zhi Body Cream

RRP: £16 for 200ml

--What does the promo say?--
"Yuan zhi root with vanilla, rose, and ylang ylang. Perfect for those with busy lifestyles, this moisturising body lotion is our yang to the yin. Soothe. Immerse. Unwind."

--Packaging--
Mine is one of the mini travel bottles you can buy on the site, which has a screw top in the same colour as the pump action mechanism that you get on the full-size one. The silver effect is glamorous and doesn't detract from the rest of the bottle, which is transparent, allowing you to see the off-purple cream within. It's plastic, which means it's light and practical, and the purple writing on the front is minimalistic and fits in well with the colour scheme of the product, while still obviously belonging to Molton Brown.

--Application--
"Apply to the skin in circular massaging movements after showering/bathing, or whenever your skin feels like it needs some TLC. For best results, use after Relaxing Yuan Zhi Bath & Shower Gel." No problems here. The lotion sinks in easily, so this takes mere moments.

--Appearance--
As mentioned, a light, faintly purple cream which leaves no residue on the skin.

--Scent--
Yuan zhi is also known as senega root, and in truth it doesn't smell of much. The vanilla and rose included are also not especially prominent, with the ylang ylang perhaps the most detectable (even if only faintly). What's left is a very clean, slightly fragranced, cotton-like smell which proves pleasant and non-intrusive.

--Texture and consistency--
Smooth, unctuous and luxurious, this is a joy to use and soaks into skin easily without a hint of greasiness or stickiness.

--Longevity--
The feeling of being moisturised lasts all day, although it's difficult to tell how long the scent lasts due to the further additions of perfume and sunscreen.

--Effects on the skin--
Senega root is traditionally used for a variety of ailments, including bites, coughs, colds, breathing difficulties, rheumatism and gout. Technically, then, in high enough quantities it should reduce inflammation and calm skin, and it did seem to reduce skin tightness, particularly after time in the sun, so is a great asset for summer. However, I think the moisturising qualities mostly come from the essential oils the product contains (vanilla, rose, ylang ylang, and meadowflower), which are extremely effective.

--Value for money--
At £18 per 200ml this isn't cheap and is on a par with brands such as Thierry Mugler, Vera Wang, Bulgari and Gatineau (perhaps indicating that you'd expect it to be more strongly perfumed!). However, this means it's an affordable luxury that everyone can enjoy. A little goes a long way, so one bottle will last longer than you'd expect too. You can also try to buy at outlet stores, such as the one located at Bicester Shopping Village, or in duty free shops, to save money, and don't forget to check the Molton Brown website for sales regularly.

Molton Brown Healthy Ziao Jao Hair Wash

RRP: £17/300ml

--What does the promo say?--
"This revitalising hair cleansing wash is ideal for everyday use. Crammed full of ziao jao extract, hydrolysed keratin and aromatic oils of juniper, artemisia and pepper, it’ll help keep your hair and scalp clean and looking healthy. Ziao jao, also known as Chinese honeylocust fruit, is known to help cleanse and keep the scalp looking healthy and soothed. Suitable for normal hair types."

--Packaging--
The sample size is a good deal simpler than the full-size bottle, which seems to have gone for an even more sophisticated layout style, with nice effective use of yellow. Despite the yellow, the shampoo's not just for blondes. The screwtop lid may be difficult to get used to for some, but fear not: shampoo slides out of the bottle slowly and there's little or no wastage.

--Application--
Lather into wet hair, and rinse after a few minutes. Nothing to worry about there.

--Appearance--
Lather is white and very ordinary-looking. No visible residue is left in hair after rinsing.

--Scent--
Unusual; floral/botanical but not sickly in any way. The fragrance is one that lingers in the hair and attracts compliments.

--Texture and consistency--
The shampoo itself is quite viscous (hence the lack of wastage mentioned in the packaging comments), but it's easy to work through the hair and easy to rinse out as well. A smooth lather is instantly created on contact with water.

--Effects on the hair--
Hair is tamed, smoothed and straightened, but frizz is not 100% reduced and there's no increase in shine either. Shame.

--Value for money--
I know it's a luxury brand, and a little goes a long way and everything, but really. This is pretty darned expensive for something that only delivers OK/normal results. If there were a matching conditioner (there isn't), you'd be talking about paying £34 for a shampoo and conditioner. Buy the travel versions for your holidays, since they are just unbeatably convenient, but then go for full-size salon brands for everyday, such as John Frieda or Trevor Sorbie (which, perhaps ironically, are considerably less expensive).

Molton Brown Skinbalance Toning Lotion

RRP: £18 for 200ml

--What does the promo say?--
"Our skinbalance toning lotion exfoliates your face and removes dead skin cells. While softening skin using American pumpkin enzymes, pink grapefruit, lime and yeast extract combine to strengthen the skin and reduce moisture loss. Alcohol-free and gentle enough to use around the eye area, this is suitable for all skin types."

--Packaging--
A nice, round, curvaceous bottle made from clear plastic, with a luxurious silver-effect screwtop lid and a few peaceful flower-style decorations. Clearly part of the Molton Brown brand and would look sophisticated on anyone's bathroom shelf.

--Application--
After cleansing, soak a cotton pad with some toner and wipe around your whole face to remove any traces of dirt and makeup.

--Scent--
None of the scents really come through individually, but the overall result is a natural sweet smell which I guess comes from the pumpkin enzymes and yeast extract. Very pleasant to use, and the scent is minimal too, meaning little or no interference with perfume.

--Appearance--
A clear, watery liquid. After use, skin appears slightly mattified and less oily.

--Sensation--
No effects, which means this would probably be good for sensitive skin. Very light and gentle.

--Effects over time--
It seems to remove residual traces effectively, which in itself would indicate an improvement in skin condition. However, I didn't find that my acneic skin saw much improvement at all, which was a shame, and suggests that this toner may work better with other skin types (normal-dry-sensitive).

--Value for money--
It seems a little foolhardy to trust something that claims to be 'for all skin types', so if you have a specific skincare need, you would be better spending the £18 on a product from a company that can provide that, such as Clinique, Lush, or Liz Earle. As an oily skin type I saw little or no difference in the condition of my skin, so would be unlikely to purchase this again. I would, however, be more willing to try some Molton Brown products more specific to my skin type to see if they can deliver on other promises.

Molton Brown GentleCleanse Eye Makeup Remover

RRP: $18 for 100ml
available at: Molton Brown stores; www.beautyrose.com

--What does the promo say?--
"This light, plant-based formula gently and effectively removes all traces of make-up (including waterproof mascara) from the sensitive eye area. Birch tree extracts and apple pip amino acids deep cleanse the skin and lashes, leaving the area calm and conditioned."

--Packaging--
In Molton Brown's usual style: a respectable, vintage-style pharmacy bottle with a logo in copperplate capitals and a chunky silver-effect lid. The bottle is promising and well-rounded in transparent plastic. However, the open top once you've taken off the lid can lead to wastage and leads to worries about travel.

--Application--
"Apply fluid to cotton pad; place over the closed eye area and leave for a few seconds before sweeping in an outward motion to remove makeup", advises the box. However, there are a few problems with this: firstly, as mentioned, the open top can lead to problems (there is no protective plastic disc with a hole in it), and secondly, the slightly oily nature of the product means that it sinks into the cotton pad too much, and that it therefore won't transfer from the cotton pad to the skin well. You are better off using your bare hands, or using a flannel or muslin cloth. It is also important to shake the product well before using as the liquid separates when left to stand.

--Appearance--
The liquid is mostly clear, with a white residue that rises to the surface when left to stand. When shaken up, white bubbles appear in the liquid. On the face, no visible residue is left.

--Scent--
None.

--Texture/consistency--
Slightly oily, but not prohibitively so. Mostly just like water.

--How does your skin feel afterwards?--
Soft and well-cared for, particularly around the eye area. There is also no stinging or unpleasant sensations at all when removing eye makeup, or in the aftermath of doing so, meaning this would be excellent for sensitive skin.

--Does it do what it says it will?--
It removes eye makeup very well, and definitely calms and conditions the eye area, meaning Molton Brown have basically fulfilled their brief. However, it is not really good for removing heavier makeup (namely foundation etc) and contrary to advice given to me by Molton Brown staff, I have not found that it works tremendously well as a general cleanser (my skin condition may have even worsened during the use of this product).

--Value for money--
It's not a bad price, and it gets even better if you buy in a pack (I bought mine for £30 in the same pack as a toner and moisturiser). It works extremely well as an eye makeup remover, and if you have especially sensitive skin you should probably get this. However, if you're looking for a cleanser and makeup remover in one, you should try something else, and I for one will be glad when mine runs out so that I can move on to better things.
