Cindy Joseph Boom Mask

RRP: from $42
--What does the promo say? --
“100% all natural raw honey, French pink clay revitalising face mask. This deep penetrating facial mask will nourish and heal your skin while naturally and gently pulling impurities from your pores. BOOM Mask is a rejuvenating, cleansing and nurturing facial mask made from all natural and organic ingredients. It is made by our beekeepers on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii.  We use raw Hawaiian wildflower honey, organic diatomaceous earth, French pink clay, Hawaiian blue green algae, royal jelly and propolis. There are no man-made chemicals, fillers, Sodium Laurel Sulfate, parabens, phthalates or fragrances of any kind.  We do no animal testing. So what do all these ingredients do? Propolis is a natural antiseptic which eliminates unhealthy bacteria. Its nutritive value also feeds and nourishes your skin, leaving it beautiful, radiant and healthy. Honey is a natural antibiotic which also hydrates the skin. Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring, soft, siliceous sedimentary rock that is the fossilised remains of marine phytoplankton.  It is easily crumbled into a fine white to off-white powder, which can have an abrasive feel, similar to pumice powder. In BOOM MASK, it gently exfoliates, removing dead skin cells, thus smoothing and toning the skin. French pink clay detoxifies and cleanses the skin. Hawaiian blue green algae enhances skin elasticity. Royal jelly nourishes the skin with vitamins, minerals and amino acids."

--Packaging--
BOOM MASK pots are simple white plastic pots with the colourful BOOM logo printed on the side.  The logo has been altered slightly, from pink and red to pink and brown (like the colour of the mask) so that this pot stands apart from the moisturisers BOOMSILK and BOOM COTTON, ensuring that you do not confuse the moisturisers with the mask.  On first opening the pot has a seal which is easily removed.

--Application--
Apply generously to clean and moistened face and neck. Allow to penetrate for 10 – 20 mins. Wash away with warm water and a wash cloth. This is not a mud mask. It will not dry on the skin but will remain thick and sticky until it is removed.

--Appearance--
A quite dark brown, grainy-looking mixture.

--Scent--
The only product in the BOOM range to have quite a strong scent of honey. If you don’t like honey, you will not like wearing this mask.  If, on the other hand, you love it – you will probably want to lick it off!!

--Texture and consistency--
Thick, creamy, slightly grainy and quite ‘solid’ in the pot. The mixture is also quite ‘goopy’ so you need to be careful when dipping your fingers in and carrying the mixture to your face or you will leave splots of it all over your bathroom surfaces.  It has a grainy texture when applied, which is not unpleasant as it feels as though you are getting an exfoliator and mask-in-one (which of course is exactly what is intended and what the promo claims).  It spreads well across the face and you have the choice of applying it in a thin or thick layer.  Leave to rest for 10 - 20 minutes and make sure no one comes in the bathroom!  Enjoy the scent of honey and try to resist licking it off from around your lips!

--Removal--
Have added an extra heading into this review because, when it comes to masks, removal is as important as application.  As stated, BOOM MASK is quite a thick and goopy mixture and is very dark brown, so if you use a washcloth to remove it then your washcloth will also need washing quite thoroughly immediately afterwards. The mixture clings much more to a flannel than it does to your face!  I think I found the perfect solution to this dilemma (especially for an impatient person who doesn’t like hanging around for her nails to dry or for masks to do their stuff), and it worked perfectly for me.  I simply put the mask on before taking my shower in the morning.  By the time I have washed body and hair, I then just put my face in the shower and let the shower wash the mask off.  A lovely invigorating final spa treatment for your face! Added bonus was the tasty mixture that found its way into my mouth.  Yum yum.

--Effects on the skin—
Skin felt cleansed and soft and smooth after application.

--Value for money--
A little of this product goes a long way and even the small pot lasts for ages.  I have been using the mask once a week, sometimes twice, and the pot has lasted me two months and is still not finished yet. Shipping from America (fast, efficient and tracked) needs to be added to the cost of the pot so perhaps worth placing a bulk order with your BOOM COTTON and BOOMSTICK TRIO.

Neutrogena Visibly Clear Pore & Shine In-Shower Mask

RRP: £4.99

--What does the promo say?--
"Introducing new Neutrogena Visibly Clear Pore & Shine In-Shower Mask. Get a shine-free, even complexion in only 60 seconds thanks to this breakthrough mask that works with steam of your shower. Its clinically proven formula reduces shine, helping to remove any excess oil for an instant matte effect without drying skin. It also helps to refine pores, cleansing deep down to unclog pores for visibly refined looking skin. Its fresh tangerine & lime scent provides an invigorating, fresh-skin feeling."

--Packaging--
The green and white colour scheme is both vibrant and unisex, with the Neutrogena label displayed prominently, while the coloured band at the top followed by the white band at the bottom of the tube clearly marks it as part of the brand also (all Neutrogena masks, scrubs etc have this design, with just the colour changing for different needs or scents, such as pink for grapefruit). The plastic flip-top lid is light while remaining sturdy and practical.

--Application--
Rub all over your face while in the shower, leaving it to sit for a minute or two while you shave or wash your body (I'm not going to list alternative in-shower activities...you're on your own there!). Rinse off under the shower or at the sink when you emerge. Use 1-2 times a week.

--Appearance--
The product itself is white, with no visible traces left after use.

--Scent--
Lively and zesty, although I think this mostly comes from scents added later that may be artificial, as only lemon peel is explicitly listed.

--Texture and consistency--
Creamy and luxurious. While slightly lumpy or grainy in appearance, it's not like an exfoliator, serving no scrubbing function, as you can't feel these lumps or grains on your skin during usage of the product.

--Effects on the skin--
The effect in just 1-2 minutes is certainly impressive - perfect for modern, busy lifestyles. Skin is indeed mattified and visibly less oily, with pore size appearing reduced and tightened temporarily. Skin also feels really refreshed thanks to the citrus element, and moisturised too, due to the mask's creamy texture.

--Value for money--
At just under £4 this definitely isn't breaking the bank and the time saved is equally valuable. If waiting 20 minutes for a mask to dry doesn't appeal, then this is definitely for you. I was sent mine for free by Neutrogena's PR (thanks guys!) but would pay up in future. I'd also be interested to try the rest of the range in future, and/or to see face wipes added to the range, as they're good value, effective products that offer a pick-me-up in the morning too.

Beauty Kitchen Abyssinian Oil Night Halo Sleep Mask

RRP: £19.99 for 60ml

--What does the promo say?--
"-Nourishing and Detoxing Overnight Mask
-Cleanses, hydrates and refreshes skin
-Glowingly beautiful finish
Night-time treatment to nourish and detox your skin while you sleep like an Angel. The balm will absorb overnight to deeply hydrate and refresh your skin. Once you’ve woken up from your ‘beauty sleep’, cleanse your face with a konjac sponge or face cloth and admire your new glowing complexion! Suitable for all skin types."

--Packaging--
The yellow box that the pot of balm comes in is refreshing, cheerful and unusual, and of course is entirely recyclable. It tells you everything you need to know, without spin or clutter. The black plastic pot is practical too in terms of both ergonomics and size.
--Application--
Use on your face after cleansing, in place of your usual moisturiser. Let the excess sink in overnight, then cleanse in the morning as normal. Simples :)
--Appearance--
The balm itself is a pale yellow, but leaves no visible residue on the face.
--Scent--
The fruits and flowers are the most prominent, particularly the orange and rose, without any particular scent being overpowering. It smells rich and natural; utterly divine. The high quality of the ingredients is evident.
--Texture--
Smooth, with only a slight graininess (which dissolves once blended onto the face), and not at all runny. It massages into the skin well and sinks in beautifully overnight.
--Effects on the skin--
Wonderfully moisturising, and furthermore, conducive to sleep: I used it and had one of the best nights' sleep I've had in ages. Crucial as we have to adjust our sleep patterns as of today due to the changing clocks!
--Longevity--
You need so little at a time (a dollop the size of a 5p piece or so for your whole face) that one pot will last you ages.
--Value for money--
Beauty Kitchen's PR kindly sent mine for free, but thanks to the top-notch ingredients, clear effects and the fact that a little goes such a long way, I would gladly pay for mine. Bonne nuit!

YouGlo WOW Mask

RRP: £100 for 5, or £21 for one
available from www.youglo.co.uk

--What does the promo say?--
"Institute Hyalual Switzerland, a scientific research centre dedicated to skin rejuvenation, created the mask as the simplest and most effective way to combine the moisturising effect of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), Argireline (famed for its skin firming properties) and RMCP-complex (a combination of ingredients that include fruit and leaf cell culture and flower extract).  It’s the interaction between HA, Argireline and RMCP-complex which results in such a complete anti-ageing effect. The mask also uses newly developed Transdermal Cosmetics Delivery technology which is activated by skin temperature to allow the ingredients to reach the deeper layers of skin.  This means that WOW mask provides 200% more hydration than other collagen-based moisturising treatments."

--Packaging--
The sleek foil sachet contains a mask that comes in two pieces. Each piece is folded in half, and once unfolded, each piece cuts across the middle of the face, just below the nose. However, this is slimy and difficult to peel apart, meaning that longer and thinner packaging would be better if it meant the mask did not have to come folded. The mask itself is made from white and clear plastic.

--Application--
After cleansing, peel off one side of the mask and place on the face. Then peel off the rest of the plastic so that only the gel mask remains. This is not an easy feat, because the mouth and eye holes are awkwardly placed, meaning you have to fix it to the contours of your face and then push it down so that full contact is made with the skin. Some areas around the eye do not have gel on them, meaning that some areas particularly prone to wrinkles are missed. The same is also true of the upper lip, where ageing can be most visible. You then need to leave the mask on for 20-40 minutes.

--Appearance--
Once you've got the white and clear plastic off, the mask itself is a transparent jelly, which leaves a slimy gel on the face that needs to be rinsed off once the 20-40 minutes is up.

--Scent--
A mild, inoffensive, natural scent.

--Effects on skin--
In the short term, skin feels moisturised and silky. However, no real long-term effects were noted.

--Sensation and texture--
The gel is slimy and solid and this ultimately creates an unpleasant, almost psychosomatic 'itching' feeling arising from just waiting to remove it. Does not cool, warm or tighten like many other face masks. It did dry out a little, but still retained a lot of moisture.

--Value for money--
While at £20.99 for one mask this is an affordable purchase for the evident short-term effects, you need to be seriously loyal to invest £100. It's possible that if the brand sold these in patches to target specific facial areas, or sold a variety of whole-face masks for different face shapes, they could sell more, especially as packaging also needs to be looked at for easier usability. Ultimately has potential, but needs work to make it even more marketable.

Clay and Herbs Purifying Acne Masque

RRP: £15.70 for 50ml; £32.50 for 100ml; £29.50 for a 110ml refill

--What does the promo say?--
"A therapeutic blend of highly absorbent and detoxifying clays, zeolite mineral, healing herbs and essential oils to deeply cleanse blemished skin."

--Packaging--
Definitely utilitarian and functional rather than glamorous or glitzy, the white and clear plastic pot is adorned with a simple black and white printed label detailing the ingredients and application instructions. No advertising to be found here, or cheap tricks to lure in buyers; in fact, this proves rather refreshing. You will need a second pot into which to decant your powder and mix it with water, though; it won't last well if the whole lot is mixed at once in the pot the powder comes in.

--Application--
Mix a small amount of the powder with water or toner to create a paste-like consistency. Spread over a clean dry face, leave to dry and then rinse off with a damp flannel. Follow with moisturiser.

--Appearance--
The greyish-brown powder turns greener when mixed with liquid. When wet, it is dark green, but it dries on the face to a paler green. This doesn't leave any visible residue when washed off.

--Scent--
A lemon and seaweed type smell gives the impression of this being a clean, natural, efficient and unisex product.

--Texture and consistency--
The powder is smooth and sandy rather than grainy, although grains become more obvious once the powder is mixed with liquid. On the skin it feels soothing and non-irritating.

--Effects on the skin--
Skin is immediately calmer and less red once the mask has been removed. Blemishes visibly begin to clear up much more quickly and do not recur so easily. Wunderbar!!

--Value for money--
While £15.70 for 50ml seems pricey, very little is needed at once for your whole face (maybe 1-2 teaspoons) and the product is extremely effective. Easily competes with and often exceeds the performance of others in its price category - which includes brands such as Dermalogica and Clinique. Although I was sent the product for free on this occasion, I would definitely spend my own cash on it in future.

Yves Rocher Gestes d'Institut Radiant Complexion Treatment

RRP: £1

--What does the promo say?--
"Does your skin look dull? In 2 steps, this Radiant Complexion treatment session wakes up your skin and helps it to rediscover its beauty. The cereals with exfoliating properties, associated with quenching maple sugar, restores its visible freshness and radiance. Let your feelings guide you, and pamper your face. Your skin is awakened and deeply hydrated. It looks radiant …and so do you."

--Packaging--
A simply-designed sachet, comprising two separate sachets joined together. The design is refined and places emphasis on the two brightly-coloured images; instructions for use are concise, and the sachets are easy to detach and open. The small size and convenient structure of the packaging makes this brilliant for travel, too.

--Application--
With wet hands, rub a small amount of the top part (the exfoliant) onto a clean face. Massage into skin and then wash off. When skin is dry, apply the mask (bottom part) in a thin layer onto the skin. Leave for 15 minutes to dry, and then peel off and moisturise as normal. Nothing complicated about this.

--Appearance--
The mask is fairly non-descript; as with many other mint masks, it's a transparent dark-green gel that dries clear on the skin. The exfoliant is more interesting, combining the simultaneous impressions of oatmeal, maple syrup, sugar and sand to create an attractive and effective-looking exfoliator. No visible residues are left on skin after use.

--Scent--
The mask smells very strongly of menthol; the exfoliant has no detectable scent.

--Texture and consistency--
As you would expect from an exfoliator, this one is satisfyingly scrubby without irritating the skin, while the mask adheres to the skin well and has no lumps. It's also not too sticky and is easy to wash off of your fingers after application. Both parts of the treatment wash/peel off well.

--Effects on the skin--
Skin definitely feels (and to an extent looks) softer and more refined after use of the treatment, even if the effects do not continue long term. Pores feel and look less clogged and the skin overall looks less shiny.

--Value for money--
I don't think you'll find anyone who will argue with that price tag. The price is fair and square: you're getting a good-quality treatment that not only serves as an affordable treat for you, but which is also ingenious when it comes to travel. Furthermore, you can buy both of the products in larger sizes (which admittedly are not as good value, but Yves Rocher often has sales or offers on) if you decide you really do like them, so it's a great opportunity to test the products, too (especially since this £1 spend gives you 2-3 applications for each product). A great buy.

Nude Miracle Mask

RRP: £37.19 for 40ml

--What does the promo say?--
"This aptly named mask will impress the multi-tasking mum who never has time for treatments as much as the Skin Perfectionist, who has regular treatments and expects real performance from her products. Natural milk AHAs and mandarin extract actively exfoliate while red ginseng stimulates circulation for visibly radiant, smooth skin. For all skins; contains no parabens, sulphates, PEGs, TEA, DEA, propylene glycol, phthalates, GMO, mineral oil or silicones."

--Packaging--
Really unique - a pale purple, rectangular prism shape, whose lid comes off neatly to reveal a pump top. It works well, looks sophisticated, and the lid closes securely.

--Application--
The website counsels as follows: "Apply a thin layer to a clean face, avoiding eyes. Skin may tingle as the treatment works. After 5 minutes, remove thoroughly with water. Use twice weekly." Pretty simple stuff.

--Scent--
It's practically scentless. The red ginseng is perhaps slightly detectable if you really sniff hard, but you have to work at it.

--Appearance--
A vibrant, but not artificial-looking, mandarin-orange gel. It goes onto the face clear and no visible residue is left after rinsing.

--Texture/consistency--
A smooth, slightly runny gel. On the face it glides comfortably and there are no problems with rinsing off the mask.

--How does your skin look afterwards?--
While it doesn't quite have the wow-factor of Crème de le Mer's Refining Facial, skin still appears visibly brighter, smoother, retextured, more even in tone, and more refined. For someone with acneic skin it's probably one of the best results I've seen yet.

--How does your skin feel afterwards?--
There is no irritation, and I didn't experience the tingling that was talked about in the promotional material. Skin feels smooth and nourished after use.

--Value for money--
I have to admit that I wasn't expecting it to be quite this expensive; I was probably expecting it to be about £10 cheaper. However, I'd definitely stick it on my Christmas/birthday wishlist, and since other items in Nude Skincare's catalogue seem to be more competitively priced (the toners, for instance), I would undoubtedly consider trying more of their products.

Sisley Radiant Glow Express Mask

RRP: £52/60ml

--What does the promo say?--
"A relaxing, softening and highly absorbent mask that cleanses the surface of the skin gently yet thoroughly. The extraordinary absorption capacity of a special blend of Clays, combined with plant extracts (Licorice, Matricaria and Rose hips) and essential oils, gives this mask gentle deep-cleansing benefits to eliminate the impurities which dull the complexion. In five minutes at the most, your skin feels fresh, clean and toned, your complexion looks matte, luminous and more even, your face appears rested and regains spectacular radiance."

--Packaging--
Having only tried this on a sample basis, I can't really say, but it looks like a fairly basic twist-top tube. The pink of the tube is a nice touch in the world of face masks (where most packages are white or green) and it just bears the information that you need to know.

--Application--
Apply a generous layer to clean skin on face and neck. After 3-5 minutes, remove with lukewarm water and follow with toner. No problems here - though I usually follow my masks with moisturiser, not with toner, otherwise surely you're wiping away all the good stuff you've just put in?

--Appearance--
A nacreous pink lotion that looks beautiful. Looks more chalky once applied to the face, and leaves no visible residue on the face after use.

--Texture/consistency--
Very smooth and quite runny (not so watery that any would be wasted on its exit from the tube, though), although perhaps begins to feel slightly 'heavier' and more intense during use as the essential oils do their work.

--Scent--
Quite heavily perfumed, but that's bound to be the case given how packed full of essential oils and fruit extracts this is.

--How does your skin feel afterwards?--
Very definitely 'treated' - as if you've just been for a facial. Very smooth and soft.

--How does your skin look afterwards?--
Sadly, I saw no difference at all (in fact, it was possibly even slightly redder due to the concentration of the oils that it contains) and for this price, I would have expected to.

--Value for money--
This is pretty expensive, and for this price I am pretty much expecting miracles, and this mask just didn't provide (I'd especially warn those with sensitive skin to avoid it). If you're going to spend in this price range, push the boat out another £6 and get Crème de La Mer's Refining Facial, which really does deliver awe-inspiring results. If your budget is lower, however, there are plenty of masks with similar ingredients that just contain fewer essential oils. Kaolin (or clay) is probably the most important ingredient here, and there are oodles of clay masks on the market that won't leave quite such a big hole in your pocket.

Purity Anti-Ageing Serum and Mask

RRP: £8.99

--What does the promo say?--
"A powerful boost to your skin's natural processes. Cranberry seed oil with Omega 3, 6 and 9 assists in moisture retention. Rose water helps to tone the skin, and vitamin E acts as an antioxidant. This combination is designed to improve and protect the health of the skin. Product ingredients: water; sweet almond oil to soften, moisturise and condition skin membranes; aloe vera to soften the skin; rose water to tone the skin; vitamin E to act as an antioxidant; and cranberry seed to give Omega 3,6 and 9."

--Packaging--
The usual purple and white concept of this line is enlivened by a little red writing this time, presumably to express the presence of cranberry seed. I like it. Plastic pot with plastic screw-top lid.

--Application--
As a serum, just rub a few drops into the skin before moisturising. For use as a mask, layer it up liberally onto clean, dry skin. Leave to dry for 5-10 minutes and then wash off.

--Appearance--
A translucent white gel-like substance that dries clear on the skin when used as a mask.

--Scent--
No discernible scent.

--Texture/consistency--
In its immediate form, it's just like a normal gel. Not sticky or lumpy. On the skin, however, when being used as a mask, it dries quickly to be quite hard and prone to crack (not that this is a problem, of course - that just tells you it's time to wash it off!). Strangely as I imagine rubbing egg white onto your skin would be like.

--Effects on skin--
As someone who is a mere 23 years in age, I can't really comment on the anti-ageing element. Perhaps if they brought out an eye cream...?
However, as a mask, this product performs impressively well, retexturing and smoothening skin to an impressive degree.

--Value for money--
This is a high-performance face mask for the money paid; it's also great for city slickers with not much time on their hands, as this has a really quick drying time too. If the serum works well, then so much the better - at half the price of No7's Protect and Perfect, you don't have much to lose in the first place.

Crème de la Mer Refining Facial

RRP: £59 for a 100ml tube

--What does the promo say?--
"This multi-action complex instantly smoothes and boosts skin's brightness and radiance - revealing a fresh new surface. The Refining Facial utilises fermented acidic sea muds to soften skin and gently lift away dry surface cells. As the cream is lightly massaged onto the face, pure diamond powder and polished sea quartz perform as physical exfoliants while smart minerals convert the massage action into energy. Circulation is immediately stimulated and skin is awakened."

--Packaging--
White, with the classic pink and green Crème de la Mer gracing it for company. A stand-alone plastic tube.

--Application--
As I have found, there are two ways with this. The Crème de la Mer website recommends massaging this onto clean, dampened skin before rinsing well and following with a toner. However, you can also use it as a mask by spreading it thinly onto clean dry skin with fingers or a spatula, leaving it on for 15 minutes and then rinsing off.

--Scent--
Lovely and minty - delish!

--Appearance--
In keeping with the scent, it's a beautiful minty green, with the exfoliants dotted visibly in the lotion.

--Texture/consistency--
A luxurious, creamy and slightly stiff lotion that spreads easily onto the face and washes off well.

--How does your skin look and feel afterwards?--
Miraculous. As well as feeling ridiculously smooth (for DAYS after you've done the treatment, not just in the immediate aftermath), skin also looks visibly much better. Pores are clearly tightened and made to appear smaller; complexion and skin tone are evened; face looks powdered and smooth, as if you'd just that moment put on your foundation, concealer and powder.

--Value for money--
Ahem. This is the tricky part. At £59 for 100ml, it's at the cheaper end of Crème de La Mer's product range, where prices frequently exceed double this. It's therefore the only product that I might ever be in with a shout at buying (or at least putting on my Christmas list). However, you only need a ridiculously tiny amount each time (I reckon my minuscule sample pot will do me at least three applications) and it blows other face masks and skin perfectionist products out of the water. If you were thinking of purchasing a serum at £70-odd, say, in the hope of your skin looking better for it, I'd say don't - get this instead. Best. Facemask. Ever.

Lloydspharmacy YOUR Organics Replenishing Face Mask

RRP: £3.99 for 50ml

--What does the promo say?--
"With organic shea butter the Regenerating Face Mask is both calming and moisturising. Used once a week as a relaxing mask, YOUR Organics Face Mask is an essential part of your skincare routine to help rehydrate your skin and counter the effects of sun, wind, heat, cold and air conditioning."

--Packaging--
As with the entire range, the design on the bottle is teal and white with a white etching of a leaf. The tube is plastic and stands up on its base lid. Easy enough to use, and the lid closes sturdily too.

--Application--
Spread a liberal amount onto your face using your fingers. Relax for 10 minutes, and then rinse off with warm water, or rub excess into skin as desired.

--Scent--
Having (oh-so-briefly, once) used Lush's Cosmetic Warrior face mask, I know how important it is for a face mask to smell good. Thankfully, this one does: you get a sweet, buttery, dessert-type smell from this mask. Delicious!

--Appearance--
A pale yellow lotion with a slight sheen to it.

--Texture/consistency--
Pretty much perfect: not too runny or stiff. It also absorbs incredibly well (I was quite surprised by the rate of absorption during use).

--How does your skin feel afterwards?--
Skin definitely feels cleaner and smoother; however, there wasn't the same mattifying effect as there often is with other masks, and I just didn't get the wow-factor smoothness that higher-end brands deliver (though at this price, this is perhaps to be expected).

--Value for money--
This is not a bad starter face mask for people who don't normally include this as part of their skincare routine: it's easy to use, affordable, delivers on the calming and moisturising promise, smells nice, and is travel-friendly too. However, if you want to splash out a bit more, I'd still recommend going for Liz Earle's version (her Intensive Moisturising Treatment) for that x-factor smoothness.

Superdrug Tea Tree Peel-Off Mask

RRP: £0.99 for 15ml sachet

--What does the promo say?--
"Give your skin a treat with Superdrug's Tea Tree and Peppermint Peel off Mask. Specially formulated, it cleanses the skin pore deep removing dirt, grease and other impurities."

--Packaging--
This apparently now comes in sachets, but when I bought mine, it came in a clear tube with green plastic flip-top lid. It may still do, in fact, but since Superdrug's website is notoriously rubbish...
I'm not sure that the sachet thing is such a great concept for general use (think slippery stickiness and the thing drying out if you don't use everything in the sachet all in one go), but for travel it's always a good thing to have tiny sachets that you can take with you.
The tube is obviously easier to use, assuming they still sell it in this format.
In terms of branding, they've done a great job, with every product in the range being instantly recognisable.

--Application/usage instructions--
Smear generously onto face, leave to dry for 20-30 mins, and then peel off.

--Scent--
Very, very strong, in a peeling-onions, makes-your-eyes-water type way. The peppermint and the tea tree oil are equally prevalent.

--Appearance--
While the gel itself is bright green, on the face it appears and dries totally clear.

--Consistency and texture--
Sticky and viscous. Not really nice to use.

--Sensation--
A very pleasant cooling feeling on the face - you feel like it's actually doing something.

--Removal--
Not easy - it takes a looooong time to dry and you may need to help it along with some water and/or a dry flannel/towel.

--How does your skin look and feel afterwards?--
Noticeably smoother and more refined. Generally less rough-looking and pores appear temporarily minimised. Over time, there is a reduction in skin problems - it's strong stuff!

--Value for money--
Excellent - even the tube, if they still make it this way, is only around £2, from which you get several applications. If you use this with the other products in the range, you can feel the promise of good skin becoming a reality for surprisingly little money. They need to do something about the consistency of this mask - it's a bit too gloopy and sticky - but I'm prepared to put up with that for great-feeling, great-looking skin.

Liz Earle Deep Cleansing Mask

RRP: £12 for 75ml tube + 2 sponges (also available in a 15ml tube)

--What does the promo say?--
"A highly concentrated clay and botanical mask that draws out impurities and excess oil, leaving your skin looking clean and clear. Specially formulated for combination, oily or problem skin. Not suitable for sensitive skin."

--Packaging--
A calm pale yellow tube with the trademark Liz Earle logo decorating it in dark brown. Plastic screw-top lid. However, you have to remember to shake this up a bit before using it, as a clear liquid tends to collect towards the neck of the tube.

--Usage instructions--
"Apply after cleansing skin. Smooth a generous layer of the mask over face and neck, avoiding eyes, lips and hairline. Leave on for 5 - 10 minutes. Wipe away residue with thoroughly rinsed sponges. Splash face with cool water. Use as often as needed: either as an all over face treatment, or to target specific blemishes or problem areas. For best results follow with Instant Boost Skin Tonic and Skin Repair Moisturiser."

--Appearance--
A dark grey-brown colour, which comfortingly really does look like runny mud rather than looking artificial. On the face, it looks patchy as it is difficult to apply evenly (mainly, I think, because it's absorbed so quickly by the skin). After use, skin looks softer and refreshed, pores and blackheads appear finer, and small patches of dry skin are made to disappear.

--Texture/consistency--
Creamy yet light, and runny but not ridiculously so.

--Scent--
Not really much discernible here.

--How does your skin feel afterwards?--
Like all the nasties have been lifted right out. I'm still left with some blackheads, but I'm seeing an improvement day on day and am confident that things will continue to improve over time. There's also no irritation - only softness (even with everyday use).

--Value for money--
Pretty good - the product is effective and very little needs to be used each time (even though it might not seem that way initially as the product sinks into the skin so quickly). It's also easy to wash off. However, you'll get an even better deal if you buy this as part of the Try-Me Treatment Kit, which contains everything you'll ever need for a variety of skincare emergencies (Spot-On Blemish Treatment Gel, Intensive Nourishing Treatment Mask, Gentle Exfoliator, Brightening Treatment Mask, and Superskin Concentrate, as well as the Deep Cleansing Mask itself and some sponges and muslin cloths) for a mere £17.50. Or, if you're after an even sweeter deal, at Cowes Week this year, at which Liz Earle has been the official skincare sponsor for the past two years, they were giving these away for free.

Liz Earle Intensive Nourishing Treatment Mask

RRP: £4 for 15ml, £10.25 for 50ml, £11.00 for 50ml + Liz Earle muslin cloth

*contains borage oil, comfrey, pro-vitamin B5, geranium, glycerin, shea butter and St John's Wort*

--What does the promo say?--
"Calming and deeply nourishing, this nutrient rich mask is a sanctuary for dehydrated, dry skin, or stressed skin. The perfect treat for skin overnight or whilst soaking in the bath."

--Packaging--
Everything about Liz Earle's packaging screams - or should that be whispers? - calmness and serenity. A pastel theme runs throughout the range's packaging - this one is a pale yellow, flat rectangular plastic bottle, featuring the Liz Earle logo and product information in elegant black capital letters. It's easy to open and close (just screw/unscrew the lid) and there is no leakage.

--Application--
Squeeze some lotion from the tube and apply liberally to the face. Leave on for 10-15 minutes (they say you can do this overnight but unless you only apply a little I think it would be quite messy!) before washing off (preferably using the Liz Earle muslin cloth, but any flannel will do). They recommend that you follow this treatment with a toner and moisturiser.

--Appearance--
If you've not used it for a while then it might be an idea to give this a shake before opening, as otherwise a clear liquid will seep out just before the cream. The cream itself, however, is an off-white colour, and when applied liberally enough to the face then the 'mask' is clearly visible. After use, there is no shine - it absorbs really well.

--Texture/consistency--
Slightly lumpy, but it all smoothens out when the lotion is applied to the face. It feels wonderful - very soothing, relaxing and non-irritating.

--How does your face feel afterwards?--
Incredibly smooth. It honestly is the best facial treatment I've ever used in this respect. After applying it, I toned and moisturised as normal before going out, and despite spending half an hour in cold winds, my face was just as smooth when I came back and it stayed this way all day, even after the application of makeup.

--Value for money--
Really excellent for a premium beauty product. Having received mine as part of a set, I wasn't aware of how much it was, but having seen the prices I would undoubtedly replace mine as soon as it ran out. Even though liberal application is advised, I wouldn't say the amount needed is at all excessive and that a tube is therefore likely to last a long time. Buy it now.

Montagne Jeunesse Chocolate Mud Masque

RRP: 99p for 20g sachet

--What does the promo say?--
"Chocolate, yes, it’s chocolate. A guilt free treat! This masque offers a feast of creamy delights – it’s outrageous! This deep cleansing masque helps unblock pores, moisturises and heals for skin that glows with health. It smells incredible – imagine these – Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter – creamy heaven. Enjoy!"

--Packaging--
It's a sachet about the size of my hand. It's easy to rip open so that you can get enough of the mask out without it going everywhere. I can't make up my mind if I like the package design or not - on one hand, it's nice to see something a bit different to the generic pretty girl, big blue eyes, smiling, thin layer of face mask on face, but on the other hand, nobody's going to lie there with the entire mask caked on their face and chocolate slabs over their eyes to boot. However, it does give Montagne Jeunesse a very distinct image that is common to all of their products and makes it stand out on the shelf - which I guess is what you're looking for if you're a marketing executive.

--Application--
Simply rip open the sachet (with fingers or scissors), squeeze out some of the mask onto your fingers, and apply to face. Leave to dry for 10-15 mins and then wash off with a flannel.

--Appearance--
The mask looks thick and creamy from the outset even before application to the face. You can then apply a layer that's as thin or as thick as you like. The colour of the mask is strong and doesn't betray the image on the sachet.

--Texture--
Creamy and soft both on your fingers and on your face. Feels firm rather than runny so it's very easy to apply.

--Scent--
Other mud masques I've used tend to smell of exactly that: mud. But oh my goodness, this actually does smell like Nutella. As a chocoholic I was in complete heaven with this.

--How does your skin feel afterwards?--
Really smooth and sort of 'finished' and refined. You smell of chocolate for a while afterwards as well. However, I wouldn't say your skin feels any better if you apply a really thick layer.

--Drying--
10-15 minutes' drying time is perfect if you only apply a thin layer. However, if you want a thicker layer and thus a more luxurious experience, half an hour's drying time might be more appropriate.

--Product life--
My boyfriend opened the packet, made one application, and then left it open. Exactly a week later, he used some again and it was still in absolutely perfect condition, despite having been left open. It didn't go dry or sticky or crumbly...it was just sheer perfection.

--Value for money--
Montagne Jeunesse is a very low-budget range, but you get an excellent product that makes your skin feel smooth, toned and refined. You get an even better bargain if you buy one of their lucky dip packs from www.montagnejeunesse.com - 10 products for £6 (60p/sachet), 25 sachets for £12 (48p/sachet) or 50 sachets for £18 (36p/sachet), where you get what they've chosen for you. (Other places, such as Amphora Aromatics online store, and Boots, also sell the products, but only the official site has the full range and only they do the lucky dips which enable you to save money.) Not only this, you get more than one application per sachet. My boyfriend applied the mask twice in a very thin layer, I applied it once in quite a thick layer, and there's still some left in the sachet, so I'd say you're getting a minimum of 3 or 4 applications PER SACHET. Bargain.

Olay Total Effects 7x Mask

RRP: £25 for 5 masks

--Packaging--
In the usual Olay style - sophisticated gold and black colour scheme cardboard envelope, with the masks wrapped again in same style plastic sachets. Neither the envelope nor the sachets are difficult to open.

--What does the promo say?--
"Olay total effects 7x mask provides skin with an instant anti-aging boost in just 10 minutes. An innovative 'stretch 'n fit' moisturising cloth mask gently envelops facial contours to deliver anti-ageing care deep into the surface layers of the skin. Used weekly as part of a pampering routine skin is radiant and younger looking.
· High concentrations of VitaNiacin - Vitamin B3, Pro-Vitamin B5, Vitamin E infuse skin to help enhance the natural moisture barrier.
· Green Tea Extract gives anti-oxidant protection.
· Glycerin, Butylene Glycol and Humectants, leave skin feeling instantly moisturised, smoother and hydrated for up to 24 hours."

--Application--
Unlike most face masks, you don't really 'apply' this one as such. It doesn't come in a packet or a tub or a tube; it's not like a lotion that you have to smear on your face and then wash off, for it is actually a cloth mask, with holes cut out for your eyes, nose and mouth. You just open the sachet (carefully - the mask is pre-covered in lotion and I nearly sent a load of the lotion onto my bedroom floor), take out and unfold the mask, and put it on your face. Stretch it sideways so that it covers your whole face, and then leave for 10-15 mins. Go and lie down and listen to some relaxing music while the mask works its magic - you'll feel much better afterwards.

--Texture--
Both the mask and the lotion are smooth and cooling.

--Appearance--
Well, I have to say that even though you could probably walk around going about your daily business wearing this (as it stays on your face so well), I wouldn't exactly advise answering the door or anything while you're wearing it, as it's pretty scary-looking. Think about that medical mask that the woman wore in that famous picture that was all over the press after the London bombings - basically that's how it looks.

--Scent--
Floral and light - not overpowering or unpleasant at all.

--Removal--
The mask is extremely easy to remove - you just peel it off, dump it in the bin, and rub any excess lotion into your face and neck, as there's no need to wash it off. However, I felt that there was perhaps a little too much excess lotion, as it took quite a long time to soak into my skin.

--Effects--
I used the mask between 10.30 and 10.45 this morning, and it's now 16.40 - my skin still feels refreshed and somehow 'different'. My face also looks smoother than it did before using the mask, but I wouldn't expect these effects to last long.

--Value for money--
My face felt nice after using the mask, but at £25.00 for 5 masks I feel this is way too expensive - the effects weren't significant enough or long-lasting enough for me to consider buying these. They don't want you to buy the masks because they make your face feel nice - they want you to buy them because they're an allegedly effective anti-ageing product. I came by mine on the Olay website, where they were sending out 1-mask samples with a £3 off voucher for if you decide to buy any, and frankly this is the only way I would want to acquire them, as I think there are better face products out there for the money.

Lush Catastrophe Cosmetic fresh face mask

RRP: £6.45 for 75g
Contains: Calamine Powder, Talc, Irish Moss Infusion (Chondrus crispus), Fresh Blueberries (Vaccinium myrtillus), Glycerine, Almond Oil (Prunus dulcis), Rose Absolute (Rosa centifolia), Chamomile Oil (Anthemis nobilis), Sweet Orange Oil (Citrus dulcis), Limonene (occurs naturally in essential oils), Perfume, Colour 18050.
Special information: This is a fresh face mask containing fruit. Therefore it will go off if you don't use it pronto (say within a month)...though this isn't exactly difficult as it's so yummy.

--Packaging--
Comes in a clear, squat plastic tub with plastic lid and a label on the top detailing the ingredients. Lush also has products that come in recycled paper/cardboard packages, including some of their moisturisers, and I prefer that kind of packaging to the one used for the face masks - the black paper/card packaging is not only more biodegradable than plastic but also looks a bit sleeker and more eye-catching.

--What does the promo say?--

"Catastrophe Cosmetic is more prevention than cure for skincare catastrophes. It is a cooling, soothing, detoxifying and refreshing blueberry mask to keep your skin sweet and pure. We recommend it for young people who are just getting into the habit of decent skincare. (Start young; you may not care now but you will be very glad you did when you reach our age.) It’s also excellent for skin which is troubled by soreness and flakiness because of the calamine powder and chamomile essential oil. The orange oil is toning and helps to remove toxins. Blueberries have loads of vitamins and antioxidants in them and they make the mask pale purple, which can only be a good thing. Use it when you’ve been too busy to take proper care of your skin.Apply to clean damp skin avoiding the eye area; leave on for ten minutes then rinse off with warm water. At least four treatments per pot. "

--Application--
When you first buy it (so when it's uber-fresh), it's very soft and easy to apply. However, as the weeks wear on, the mask becomes harder and much more difficult to keep on your face, but this can usually be combated by mixing it up with some water so that it becomes more of a paste. It's quite potent stuff, and Lush recommends that you only use their fresh face masks once or twice a week.

--Appearance and scent--
Lumpy, purple and gorgeous-smelling...the blueberry and calamine scents really come through and you can see the blueberries in there too. As the face mask gets older it tends to acquire a more pinkish-grey hue though.

--Texture--
Kind of like a lumpy lotion. Quite pliable. However, if you mix it with water towards the end of its life, it becomes runnier, more like a lotion, and perhaps easier to apply and wash off than it was in the first place.

--Longevity--
Sadly, not much. Even if you mix it with water to prolong its life, you're only going to get a month or so out of it. And at nearly £7 a pot, that's quite a lot for a student, so I may have to buy them less often. Shame. Still, they are fresh, and you can't expect them to last much longer. Apparently keeping them in the fridge helps.

--Removal--
Just splash a flannel in some warm water and wash it off your face that way. Warning: this method may turn your flannel purple, but it comes out just fine in the wash.

--How do you feel afterwards?--
Skin feels pampered, refreshed, and as soft as a baby's. An essential part of a good skin routine to help keep blemishes under control. Beautiful.

--Value for money--
As I mentioned, it's kind of expensive, but it does help if you've got problem skin (though I've heard Cosmetic Warrior works better, so I might try that soon) and it feels lovely and luxurious. It's totally up to you to decide if it's worth the money.
